Leadership Motivating and Rewarding Employees Interviewee: Ihsan AbuGhazalah Position: Company: Albaik Department:(1) How would you assess your kind of leadership for the company?Ihsan: Through the years of challenging yet fruitful experience of managing Albaik, I have realized how highly important it is to motivate people. As a leader within a dynamic process of food business, I have learned the essence of maintaining balance between pressing my staff toward optimum performance and encouraging them to express freedom of choice when it comes to working style.(2) For concrete description, to what object would you compare leadership?

Ihsan: If leadership were a compass, as I see it, the key to finding the true ‘north’, I suppose, is simply about leading my people to love what they do in order to profit.(3) Since your leadership possesses the power to motivate, how far do you perceive has motivation reflected in the attitude of Albaik employees and their productivity in general?Ihsan: Well, so far, the company has been kept stable with low frequency of absenteeism. At one time, I instructed an undercover agent to inspect the workplace and it gladdened me deeply to find out in his report that good vibes were all over the place.

He felt an atmosphere of wonder himself and confessed that what struck him the most was the manner by which the crew delivered personalized customer service.(4) What about your own encounter of the staff whenever you can spare time with them? Ihsan: In my observation, there exists a sense of responsibility in everyone and my immediate subordinates talk to me with comfort. Often, they move with unreserved behavior of showing their real concerns as much as all the others act similarly for the sake of healthy relations.(5) Was there ever a point when Albaik reached the verge of crisis and you needed to make a risky adjustment of ceasing promotions?

Ihsan: As far as I can recall, yes. There was a time when in about two quarters, the restaurant was infrequently visited by customers, the reason being that a nearby store launched a new interesting item in their menu, one similar to our fish fillet meal which caught the attention of many. Somehow, this incident led us to cut costs with certain resources and about three of the anticipated promotions were on pending status.(6) In that case, how do you raise hopes of high performers or those you could not afford to lose for being an asset to the company?

Ihsan: I discuss with them future plans of growth for the company so that I can stimulate their imagination toward the brighter positive side of things. This way, I believe that they can visualize opportunities and be guided back to their original drive or passion for work. Actually, I have also tried giving my potential workers a treat in a fancy restaurant and in my favorite vacation spot where I gathered them for a light chat. Those who nearly decided to leave normally delight and look for more bonding moments especially when I narrate my inspiring account of Albaik’s humble beginnings and the philosophies I have lived by to keep the business in the mainstream.(7) When scheming for new reward system, would you count your employee’s opinion?

Ihsan: Yes I would. I think that is one great way of getting to know my people better. However, besides the reward system, I would equivalently bring up discussion of issues that deserve sanction to be fair and complete.(8) If a candidate for termination plead his case before you, what would you do?Ihsan: I would listen and review the person’s case to weigh options and determine which would serve justice for both the company and that person.
