Activity journal Name: Institution: Activity journal Parts of speech The following is an example of the communication process The communication process consists of a sender who is the party that sends a message. For example, John will be the sender. He will require the message, which is the idea/information to be conveyed. Furthermore, John will need to decode his message. Decoding the message entails transforming his thoughts so that it can be conveyed in a form that it can be easily sent, for example words (Winch, 2013). There are different factors that interfere with the transmission of messages. These factors are called communication barriers. Communication barriers include: language, noise, attitude, physical barriers, physical disabilities for example speech difficulties or hearing problems and cultural differences among other factors. Therefore, for maximum/effective communication, barriers should be minimized or eliminated (Winch, 2013). . 2. Nouns I am an international student, at first I felt timid, however I realized that I can use the power of language to survive socially, economically and academically. I admire great historical personalities who have used power of language to succeed in life. From them I learned the importance of using the words to my advantage. I have held talks about culture, race and issues that affect youths in the 21st century. Therefore, through the power of language, I have inspired students under one significant cause, to change the world and make it a better place for all. Furthermore, I discovered the necessity of using the first person in language. In socialization with other students and my lecturers, use of first person enabled me to enjoy respect and acceptance. This enabled me to excel both in my academics and social life. Lastly, through the power of language and applying it in my daily life made me to appreciate the fact that language has the potential to impact on the society positively. 3. Verbs There are various forces that have contributed to the English spoken today. First, the immigrants from West Indies and Indian subcontinent added diversity and variety to the dialects and accents in the UK. There have been original influences particularly from overseas. English language can be traced back from the Anglo-Saxon mixture, since then, it has been altered, played and transported across the globe in different forms. Other forces include English across the globe, influence of empire and American English. A global political and economic structure requires a common language. Therefore, need for a global language has contributed to English becoming a global language. Furthermore, global language emerges primary because of economic and political power of its native speakers. Therefore, it was the British industrial and imperial power that spread English across the globe between 17th -20th century. British imperialism legacy remained rooted in most countries thus making the English language to be institutionalized in their civil service, courts, schools, parliament and higher education establishments. Nonetheless it has been mainly the American cultural and economic supremacy in television, film, music, finance, business, pornography, drugs and information technology that has consolidated the position of English as a global language. Lastly, American dominance as well as influence globally makes English language important in international markets (Wilber & Miller, 2003). 4 Verbs I consider a future career in business. I have learned that in order for one to be a successful entrepreneur, it is important to employ important communication skills with the staff, customers, investors and suppliers. Therefore, the written materials from marketing plan, advertisement, reports, and minutes to business letters should be written in a business language and relevant genres adhered to. Business language entails using language in a positive and courteous manner. This is important to business as it impacts on how the message is received. Moreover, in business communication it is important to ensure that the language used is not only simple but also clear. Therefore, it is important to avoid using jargons. There are various ways to simplify the business writing. It is always important to remember the audience. Additionally, organization is key; hence information in all business writings should be presented in logical and sequential manner. Use of active voice is also important. All the sentence should begin with ‘we’ rather than using generalizations like the company. Other important aspects that are important in business writing include clear design, use of charts, tables, and examples, in addition to use of short sentences (Newsom & Carrell, 2001). The mentioned skills will be applicable in various areas of business writing such as e-mailing writing, letter writing, memo writing, proposal & report writing, and advertisement. 5. Pronouns Digital technology has altered writing for the media by making writers to be more available not only to readers but also to publishers and each other. Written media has become more accessible as different content are shared via the internet. Digital technologies are a new method of delivery and force of connection of learning, entertainment and information opportunities in today’s world. The internet has enabled inclusion of video in the online news. When people watch the news, there is part of their brains that closely monitor the content. Moreover, today written is presented in a way that people can comment as well as initiate discussion boards. Before, the emergence of the internet, it was impossible for readers who had never met to start spontaneous discussions. Therefore, journalists write in a way that they appeal to the audience emotions and hence initiate a reaction. Moreover, online sources provide accurate, quick and efficient reporting of all the breaking news. Therefore, journalists write in a way that they provide their audience with events synopsis as they happen. Furthermore, as the story develops, it is possible for journalists to feed the online sources with rich information, thus keeping the audience updated within seconds. However, the speed in which news information is posted has impacted on the accuracy of the reporting. Therefore, with rapid emergence of technologies, definition of print journalism is changing (Newsom & Carrell, 2001). 6. Sentence structure A cyclist dies on the spot after a collision with a salon car. The accident took place in the Perth suburb of Willetton. According to the police reports, the crash took place at 6.15 am at the intersection of the Willeri drive and High Road. However, 10 hours later, the man is yet to be identified. According to police spokesperson, the victim appeared to be of African descent was aged in his 40s and was wearing a blue t-shirt, a blue pair of trouser, a white polo cap and white sports shoes. The man was riding a red mountain bike. The Perth police department is requesting any person with details about the victim’s identity or a witness of the crash to immediately call Crime Stoppers. Perth auditor-General is presently investigating the safety of the cycle path network, following several deaths of cyclists on WA roads yearly. The audit will examine whether suitable infrastructure and support is in place to encourage and support safe cycling. 7 Social media has drastically altered how human beings communicate. Not long ago, human beings communicated through telephone, mail and in person. Presently, use of instant messages, online chats, video calls, and other aspects of social media has redefined human communication. The redefinition has had huge effects. The whole paradigm of social media has changed the basic/primary rules of human communication. First, social media encourages not only contributions but also reactions from other parties who are interested. Additionally, communication is no longer broadcast, one-way or sent to a passive audience. Social media id a multidimensional conversation that engages all the parties involved. Moreover, it creates a community of individuals who share common goals, interests and attitudes such as politics, friendship, photography and professionalism (Hicks, 2004). However, despite the positive effects of social media on communication, there are also negative impacts. First, social media has become an addiction where families would prefer to text rather than have a conversation with other members. This is a detriment to human emotional intelligence and verbal skills. Lastly, it has made people to spend more time with their laptops, tablets or smart phones, thus negatively impacting on face-to face interactions (Tanner, 2002). 8. ‘Unease with Australia's Islamophobia’ is a feature article that appeared in Aljazeera 12 April 2015, and was written by Jarni Blakkarly. It is a follow up of the news on the reclaim Australia rallies as well as counters rallies that have highlighted xenophobic fears and social tensions. Another news feature article is stopping migrant boats Australia style. This news article was written by Royce Kurmelovs on 22nd April 27, 2015. Both news feature articles were published in Aljazeera (Blakkarly, 2015). Both articles take human-interest approach and the writers employ elements of creativity. Moreover, the subjects of both features are related to the news items; however the articles do not adhere to the pyramid structure that is characteristics of news articles. Additionally, the articles place more emphasis on the people involved and not on the actual facts of news. It is evident that both articles evoke emotional reactions such as anger and frustrations from the readers. Lastly, the features give depth meaning to complicated news in Australia. They clarify and interpret the events (Kurmelovs, 2015). Pertaining to structure, the articles are similar, in that they have an attractive title, lead sentence, there is immense use of pictures and the body is divided into different parts. The only difference in the two articles is the subject under discussion. 9. Media releases Press release covers important events such as conferences, seminars, appointments and other important events. The first press release covers the commemoration of the ANZAC day. The second press release is on Anzac Day Coverage on ABC TV, Radio and Online (About ABC). The two news releases are similar in that both of them are newsworthy. They have elements of news value, hence making the audience to be interested on them. Additionally, they are factual true. They provide accurate information on the events providing dates, places and other important information. Moreover, both press releases are not only brief but also precise. For example, the press release on the commemoration of the ANZAC day is precise and concise and focuses only on the important details and important activities of the event. Both press releases are written in simple as well as conversational style. It is also evident that both of the releases were suitable for publication. They effectively answer the 5 Ws, where, who, why, when and what (About ABC). In terms of structure, the releases portray the standard format of writing media press releases. At the top, there is the date, followed by a title line. The press releases are then signed off with addresses for further inquiries, and for credibility (About ABC). References About ABC.
