Distributed systems represent a further development in telecommunications, whereby the various connections within a telecommunications system are distributed out into a network (www.freepatentsonline.com). These systems use microprocessors which include PCs and workstations and consist of a connection of several computers which appears as a single, complete entity to the users of the distributed system. The best example of a distributed system is the world wide web, which allows several computers across the world to network and share information and communications as if they are one coordinated, integrated entity.

Other examples include networks of play stations or organizational Intranets where several computers within an organization are connected to each other. There are different kinds of distributed connectivity in systems, such as (a) distributed computing systems (b) distributed information systems or (c) distributed pervasive/embedded systems. The major objective in distributed computing is to increase the computing power of desktop CPUs and communications bandwidth.(www.extremetech.com). The advantage in using distributed computing is that it also allows the harnessing of idle CPU cycles and compiling the storage systems of several different machines belonging to individual users, to work on very large processing applications.

This is also the basis upon which users are able to download very large music or media files for example, the storage powers of idle CPUs of hundreds of users is harnessed and utilized to provide the essential requirements for downloading such large files. Distribution information systems work on the principle of provision of information services at many different locations rather than being confined to a single location. When a computer service runs at a single location, there is a higher likelihood that it will go out of service, as compared to
