Case Study - Alternative Work Arrangements Question Alternative work environment provides flexibility to the employees. It is beneficial for both the employees as well as the employers of the organization; the employees feel more motivated and satisfied and contribute significantly towards increasing the productivity and performance of the organization. The female employees encounter a conflict in maintaining a balance between the work life and family life. Therefore alternative working arrangement such as flexible work schedules, job sharing can help in boosting the morale of the employees. It results in work simplification which allows the workers from diverse background to work together, leads to increase in production and profitability. It provides job rotation which overcomes the boredom of overspecialized work. It increases the responsibility, recognition and opportunity of the employees for achievement of their goals or objectives. The employers are able to retain the productive employees by offering flexible working conditions. The employers are able to attract the skilled and talented workers by providing flexible working hours and alternative working arrangement. The employees generally prefer to work with those organizations that provide perks and benefits to the organization. Google is considered as the best company to work for. It facilitates the employees to set their own daily work schedules. It promotes job sharing where more than one employee performs the job. Therefore the flexibility acts as an important element in motivating and retaining talented work force in the organization. Therefore it is beneficial for both the employers and the employees working in the organization (Lincoln and Kalleberg 40-45). Question 2 Apart from the benefits of the alternative work arrangement, there are various negative consequences, the negative outcomes for the employers are training the employees, monitoring their work progress on a frequent or timely basis, performance evaluation etc. The training time is increased; it lowers the personnel utilization levels, the chance of error will be more. The financial cost also increases due to the changes in the job environment. The alternative work arrangement will encourage the baby boomers to stay in the organization which will restrict the entrance of new talented individual in the company. The flexibility and the benefit provided by the organization will prevent the baby boomers from leaving the organization. Therefore the productivity and the performance of the organization may be negatively affected. The negative outcome encountered by the employees due to the alternative work arrangement are the employees fell more relaxed , which affects their performance, there is a greater chance of mental overload and stress. The employees may face disparity or bias, since the work load is not equally divided among the employees. The expectation of the employers on the employees increases, since the organization is providing perks and benefits to its employees on behalf of receiving adequate effort and contribution from the employees. The workers face stress caused by new and advancing technologies in the workplace. (Keller 31-42). Question 3 The factors influencing the organizations for considering the alternative working arrangements are motivating the employees, retaining the productive employees in the organization, recruiting skilled and qualified employees, and lowering the rate of absenteeism, telecommuting and fulfilling the expectations of all employees working for the company. The vice president of human resource at Microsoft in Canada recommended that generation X and generation Y are coming to the same work place with their own expectations to be treated as an individual. Therefore in order to establish a relationship between them alternative work arrangement is required to be provided and the employees also rank first those companies that provide flexible working conditions to its employees. The alternative work arrangement can motivate the employees by providing benefit and perks which will encourage them in putting their effort towards the accomplishment of the task, flexibility in the working hours will assist the organization in retaining their employees, since the employees receives flexibility and freedom in carrying out their work effectively, the rate of absenteeism also decreases when the workers are satisfied with the working condition of the company, telecommuting helps in achieving a relation between the needs of the organization and employees for fulfilling the task demands. The conflict that is faced by most of the organization between the management and the workers can be eliminated and minimized by emphasizing on alternative work arrangement (Kreitner 11-17). Question 4 The Telework enhancement Act of 2010 will be useful for the Federal government and its employees, since it will assist in recruiting more talented individuals in the organization. The Act was passed by both the houses of congress in United States and then it was signed by President Barrack Obama. The act is beneficial since it provides a framework for the agencies that will increase the improvement in technology, retain talented and efficient employees and maintain productivity in various situations. It will assist in increasing the national security and face emergency situations. The employees will also be benefited by this act since the employees will receive more benefits and flexibility in their working condition which will encourage the employees in delivering high quality work performance. It will benefit America, but this concept will not only benefit America, but it will benefit other countries of the world too. The alternative work arrangement is considered as the motivating potential score that indicates the potential for motivating the employees. The act reflects the conviction of the government that well implemented telework programs provide valuable tools to the agencies in fulfilling the mission or objectives of the organization for enhancing the work life effectiveness. It encourages a high degree of worker control and also good support system for its workers. Question 5 The availability of alternative work arrangement for private sector employees in the United States should be mandated by law because it will assist the organization in retaining the skill and talented workforce in the organization. The needs, desire and expectation of the workers can be enhanced by alternative work arrangement. The support of the government for implementing flexibility in the working condition will assist the private sector enterprises in carrying out their operation effectively and efficiently. The law has been enacted for the federal government companies; therefore the similar law should also be enacted for the private sector organization which will result in satisfying the employees and recruiting skillful employees in the organization. It should be mandated by law since the conflict is more faced by the employees in the private sector as compared to the government sector. Technical and interpersonal skills are important therefore the alternative work arrangement in case of private sector must be mandated by law. It facilitates in recognizing the importance of skills and abilities in meeting the demand of the work. Works cited Keller, John.
