There are different words that can be considered as a distinct indication of the period from which it had been written due to the fact that they are not being commonly used in the present literary works and even conversations. Another observation that can be made is that the story is presented in a simple conversational structure. Through the said tone, it can be considered that the readers can easily empathize and relate to the feelings of the characters of the story. In addition to the said tone, the story is mainly on the point of view of the girl, Sylvia.

Through the eyes of the child, certain lessons can be taught which can be considered as one of the greatest achievement of the story. The story is a basic representation of the interaction of the different characters in nature. These characters are the human beings, the plants, the animals and the other elements of nature. The most important character is Sylvia who can be considered as basically instinctive, maybe due to the fact that she is still young. She just goes about her daily activities on the basis of guidance and instincts.

The reliance on instincts can be considered as one of the main reasons why she decided to protect the white heron. In nature, she was able to realize the feeling of belongingness during the fleeting moment she experienced watching the sunrise with the heron on the treetop. At that moment she had been part of nature, with the optimum detachment from her human goals and dreams of control over other creatures which she is still yet to realize as she grows old, she had decided to prioritize the needs of the creature she had felt deep attachment to at the said moment.

The said feeling can be considered as what the older characters of the story hold. The grandmother and the hunter can be considered as representations of the majority of the population wherein other priorities and goals took over the concern for other organisms in nature.
