In each case, the trinkets, pictures, and letters pull them closer as a group and are the thin thread that holds them to survival.
Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is the leader of the platoon of soldiers spending their time fighting the enemy in the jungles of Vietnam. He is one of the more pathetic characters in the book. He carries a picture of Martha and dreams of her nearly constantly. Yet, she does not love him, and in fact barely knows that he is alive. Yet, her mere existence is enough to carry Cross through the hardships and the constant threat of death. He will never marry her or even date her. She is a distant memory that exists only in his mind. This is similar to the pantyhose that Henry Dobbins wears around his neck. He believes they are filled with magic that is ever present in them (P.118). They are magical charms meant to bring good luck in a situation that is surrounded by bad luck.
While Dobbins and Cross carry good luck charms, other men are more pragmatic about their belongings. Dave Jensen carries extra soap and toothpaste in the hopes of warding off disease. Though the bullets and booby traps were the biggest threat, Jensen saw dirt and disease as the villain. Ted Lavender carried tranquilizers to ward off the anxiety of war. When men go into war they often carry personal belongings to remind them of someone or somewhere off the battlefield. These personal momentos such as pictures, letters, or souvenirs help them maintain some form of human contact in a very inhumane activity…
