My Position On The Great Debate My position on the "Great Debate" is to agree with DuBois. DuBois felt and d that there should be no limits and moreover that there should be no slow growth of the African American potential. Washington on the other hand, looked to a small growth which to him was limited. Washington called for a mere physical growth. All men, no matter what color, deserve and are entitled to growth on a spiritual, mental and physical level. We should not allow ourselves to be misled by the impressive language offered by Washington.

He merely supports the notion of African American being paid for their labour. DuBois on the other hand, recognizes that with education, comes potential. What would DuBois say looking at Barak Obama today He would say that Obama was the embodiment of his teachings. Indeed he would be correct. While it is true that Obama like DuBois was light skinned, I think that the notion that the shading of skin being relevant in this day and age is somewhat foolish. Agreeing with the skeptics simply adds to argument offered by Washington.

While I don't believe that Washington was trying to marginalize African Americans, his premise does. Man is not valued for his physical labor. To follow Washington is to believe that black people have a mule's value and that is frankly, insulting. I was quite proud to be publicly performing my activity. My hope was the same as my concernwill my audience get the message behind the rap I think that the measure of my success is watching the reaction of people as they hear me. I look to see in their eyes, far more than a vacant stare.

I want the vacancy to be replaced with knowledge and just maybe some enlightenment which leads always to inspiration. I spoke from the street which is where so many of us come from. The street is a place where you survive based on your own wisdom. You can get slick and die, but for what This is not what the abolitionists wanted for us! Is my piece shocking Yes it is! Does it convey a message that people will understand Yes! That alone makes my message delivered as successful. Drugs and violence have made their way from the street to the church, the school, the job and in our homes.

We cannot stop drugs from entering our streets. We can however stop them from entering our homes. We may be powerless over what happens in the streets, there will never be enough law and punishment to make the infestation in the streets stop. When we learn to maintain our homes as the sanctuary that they should be, we can stop drugs dead at our door. That is my message. Only the future will tell if it is a successful one.
