Studying Abroad in China - Essay Example

The country and its leaders understand the critical importance of education's role in that achievement and support that endeavor both financially and politically. China has many respected universities in all avenues of learning including fields of study in such disciplines as business management, technology, science, medicine, law, economics, literature, and political science. It's clear that education has played a major role in the recent economic development of China (Guo & Cummings 2005).

In terms of cultural history, during the days of the Cultural Revolution, that initiative seemed to sidetrack educational initiatives. However, following Mao Zedong's death in 1976, there was a realization of the value of education to the country-driven primarily by Deng Xiaoping's "Four Modernizations," which focused on the recognition that training and education were critical building blocks necessary for the country to advance in all disciplines (Lewin 1994). With the national initiative to become a world power, it was realized that education was vital to goal achievement.

This in turn provided circumstances for growth and continued improvement in all levels of education within the country including higher education. These events created an excellent opportunity to take advantage of a cultural shift that is consistent with my personal beliefs and goals. Personal BenefitMy current area of study is business and I plan to continue in this field during my studies abroad. The main objective for continuing in the field of business is to supplement my current knowledge and investigate the opportunity to learn about the globalization drivers that impact nearly all business transactions regardless of the country of origin.

This includes evaluation of studies in advanced economics, strategy, management, marketing, ethics, accounting, human resources, and business technology. To assist in developing a precise course of study, I have focused on a goal of broadening those core competencies that are essential for success in international business, including those attributes necessary to advantageous multicultural transactions. A focus on international business is certain to assist in providing personal credentials and unique differentiation important to businesses as they look to retain the next generation of leaders.

From a personal perspective, it will not only permit broader and more interesting career choices but also allow the opportunity to live and study in a diverse and dynamic cultural environment.
