Running Head: GAY MARRIAGES Gay Marriages of the of the Gay Marriages Marriage has been one of the latest hard hitting debates because of the impact it would have in our society, politics, and family values. Since the beginning of time, marriage has always been seen as the union of a man and a woman. In the bible in the book of Mark chapter 10 verses 6-9, it clearly states the union of marriage between a man and a woman and that no man put asunder to it. The union of marriage has always been praised by many cultures around the world, and has also been recognized as significant or official by the national government, but now this very unification is being diluted and disgraced by many people who think that this bond between man and woman is insignificant.

This movement to change the definition and value of marriage between a man and a woman is morally wrong if you believe in Christianity, bad for family values, bad for society, and bad for marriage. (Corvino, 2002)  Some people believe that gay marriage should be legal in every U.S. state and be recognized in the same way that a traditional marriage is between a man and a woman. Gay partners hold commitment ceremonies, some states recognize civil unions, and Massachusetts now allows same-sex marriages.

However, according to these groups, gay couples should be entitled to the same civil rights, privileges, and legal protection as traditional married couples. However, this wont happen until gay marriage is recognized by the federal government.        Marriage between man and woman is the most structured form of family style because there is a balance of the sexes that complement each other, and because it also involves masculine behaviors and feminine behaviors that are important for role modeling for children.

The other advantage of a heterosexual couple is that when a family is raised, there is absolute clearness in who is the biological parents, where as in a gay marriage who will teach the appropriate behaviors to the children if any, and how will they justify the existence of their children when adopted or when created by a surrogate mother? In addition, gay marriage will affect our understanding of human relations and institutions because of the different issues like divorce, affairs, health benefits, and psychological problems impacted on the children who are raised in this kind of atmosphere.

The other consequence of gay marriage would be the distortion of the definition of marriage itself. For thousands of years it has been understood that marriage was between a man and a woman, and that it included a concept of commitment and with gay marriage sexual fidelity would be detached from the commitment of marriage because it does not consist of a man and woman. The other issue with gay marriage is that children have more difficulty adjusting to their gender, and when they are going through their teens.

Gay marriage or unity encourages a life style behavior that can lead to STDs, drugs, depression, HIV, and suicide. Children in these types of families might also be more frequently molested in comparison to straight couples and have a hard time with the peer pressure from other kids which may make them more likely to experience depression and turn to drugs for acceptance and tolerance of their gay parents. According to Child Trends, research has showed that a family by two biological parents matters a lot to children.

Moreover, according to a scientific study, among 12 year old boys more than 25% already feel uncertain about their sexuality and with gay marriage in full conflict it will only make it more confusing for them to decide which life style to live by. (Held, 1995)        In Canada, men in gay unions have an estimate of eight partners per year out of their union. This kind of behavior is bad because it can lead to higher chances of STDs and HIV, and create more instability to an already fragile mind.

Besides, if we accept this now, what will be next for society to tolerate or accept as just another life style? Gay marriage would be bad because it would introduce more conflicts and instability to heterosexual marriages that are already having a hard time with stability. Furthermore, allowing the union of the same sex couples would in effect make marriage a different thing because it would weaken the arguments against polygamy and lead to the legalization of which the American Civil Liberties Union has argued for since 1991.

One of the biggest contributions to marriage is that it helps guide the lives of people and it is altered for just a life style, how will it affect those guided by it? Besides, if you disconnect marriage from reproduction then marriage might seem less meaningful and instead simply a commitment we make like an act of will. This could lead people to taking their marriage less serious and more focus on their selves. Some basic problems is that any major changes in marriage laws would weaken people’s sense of marriage as something just a little less awesome that has to be accepted or rejected on its own terms.

The other thing about marriage is that it has developed over the centuries and some how become refined to meet the demands of heterosexuals. Gay marriage wants to imitate and be considered equal but like most imitations they hardly last and are effective and would therefore result in more or less self conscious. (Fischer, 2001)        To sum up, marriage is a sacred act that is supported by biblical scripture and by many people across the world. Gay marriages are not equal and should not be considered legal because it would degrade the whole sense of marriage that has been established for many years for the support and guidance of our lives and not for the sake of lifestyle.

Gay marriages are harmful to our society because of the influences it can have in our young people who are already confused about their identity and because of the social benefit complexity of it. Furthermore, it is dangerous because of the health related issues like STDs, HIV, and depression that may be experience by the children involved in these types of marriages. Gay marriages also pose serious issues like who are the biological parents and how will this affect the children into adulthood.
