Assessing credibility Credibility of media Your grade News clip. Who paid for each example to be created? Time Warner co, the owner of CNN paid for the news clip to be made though it was indirectly funded by sponsors. Can you detect a slant—that is, a secondary opinion conveyed by the examples’ creators? Giulianis secondary opinion can be easily traced when he says that "he is shocked that America hasn’t been attacked again". This is his secondary opinion not related to 9/11 and this shows that he was expecting more and vicious attacks.

What does each example reflect about society at large? Is it credible? Explain your answers. The news clip emphasizes the fact that the society is still grieving for the victims of 9/11 and is angry for revenge. They are worried about their safety and at the same time are questioning the fact that why are the culprits still at large. Are you skeptical of the sources’ credibility? Why or why not? The source is an ex-mayor of Newyork city who had directly suffered from the 9/11 attacks. He is a man of great repute.

His experience as a mayor, a lawyer and a business man makes his an extremely credible and trust worthy person who could not be doubted about his views. The sources can also be relied upon because it is a live transmission with no modifications or emissions.Do you detect any bias? Why or why not? Though the opinions are sincere, Guiliani is as unbiased as a person can be but as an American and particularly one who was in office at that time, he has the anger and the emotions of the affected person.

His unbiased nature is best represented when he says that Bin Laden should get justice and not vengeance. But as a human being he did get a bit biased when he talked about Iraq in general. In his perceptions, government of any kind was not possible in Iraq five years back. Advertisement Who paid for each example to be created? Pedigree foods paid for the advertisement to be created and to be run on TV.Can you detect a slant—that is, a secondary opinion conveyed by the examples’ creators?

There is just one primary opinion of overweight dogs in the advertisements. The advertisement is short and straight forward with no space for secondary ideas. But the slant is perfectly seen as the main purpose of the advertiser is to sell pedigree light and make a profit. What does each example reflect about society at large? Is it credible? Explain your answers. It reflects that the society is extremely concerned about their pets and emphasizes this by triggering dog owners not to neglect their dogs by letting them become overweight.

The advertisement tries to predict the future when owning a heavy dog so though it comes from a credible company, it cannot be directly depended upon.Does the ad make a claim? The advertisement claims to help overweight dogs lose weight. This is depicted in a comic but appealing manner by showing what overweight dogs can cause. The ad doesn’t directly make a claim but fortifies the need to put "dogs on a diet" and then presents a solution to it. What fear or desire does the ad play into? The advertisement portrays the consequences of having an overweight dog.

It creates a fear in the mind of a pet owner that, his dog, if heavy can tilt the car. These consequences are portrayed in a comic yet realistic manner thus enhancing the pet owners and the potential customers desire to have a healthy dog.Does it target an existing fear or desire or does it try to create a new fear or desire? The concept of having healthy pets is not new and pet owners are known to go to great lengths for the health of their pets. The concept of a healthy diet is also not novel but integrating both concepts is relatively new.

Pedigree initially innovated the idea of light food for dogs and now has created a new fear of having overweight dogs and their potential for causing trouble.Does it try to invoke feeling, use admirable people to persuade, or describe a common situation? Pedigree plays with the emotions of all dog owners and dog lovers. It describes a novel, possible situation and using that it invokes feeling, triggering dog owners concerns for their dogs. Though it doesn’t use admirable people, rather they are focused on everyday life, the commercial capitalizes on very cute dogs as customer catchers.

Would you make a purchase based on the information presented? If I had a dog who had the tendency to go over weight or who eats a lot, I would definitely be convinced by the commercial. But this decision would not be based on the advertisement alone. Though the advertisement brings pedigree light into focus and generates awareness about it, my decision would also be based on the reliability and the quality standards of the company. My decision would also be dependent on the calorie uptake provided by the new food and its comparison with other foods.

Thus the advertisement promotes Pedigree light but it doesn’t provide substantial information.References:Wiman, A. (1983). Parental Influence and Children’s Response to Television’s Advertising. Journal of Advertising, 12(1), 12-18. Retrieved from Business Source Premier Database.
