Charter of the United Nations Introduction The Charter of the United Nations is a document that came into effect on the 24th of October 1945, five months after its endorsement and signing in San Francisco. The document contains regulations guiding member states resolve to eliminate war that as witnesses before, could cause havoc to the human race. Human rights, social development and justice are also provided for in the provisions of the Charter (Fassbender, 2009). Amendments have taken place since then to allow for vital changes such as membership and decision making.

The Charter contains 16 chapters that are divided into various Articles as outlined below.Chapter ITwo Articles are classified under this Chapter, mainly giving detail on United Nations four Purposes (Article 1) as well as its seven Principles (Article 2). Maintenance of peace and security as well as friendly relationships among nations coupled with cooperation summarizes the purposes. Sovereignty, good faith, peace security and justice, territorial integrity, assisting the UN, adherence by non members as well observance of domestic jurisdiction are the Principles.

Chapter II Contained in this Chapter are membership regulations under Article 3 to Article 6. Original membership, peace loving states admission, any other admission, suspension and expulsion are highlighted across these Articles (Grant, 2009). Chapter III Articles 7 and 8 fall under this Chapter to give detail on organs of the UN, which include General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, International Court of Justice (ICJ) and Secretariat and a provision for subsidiary organs.

Eligibility to the organs is not restricted.Chapter IV The General Assembly is outline under this Chapter, using Articles 9 to 22. Its composition, functions and powers, voting and procedure are clearly outlined.Chapter V The Security Council’s detail, regarding its composition, functions and powers, voting and procedure fall under this Chapter and is divided into Articles 23 to 32.Chapter VI Named as Pacific Settlement of Disputes, the Chapter outlines dispute resolution as Security Council and General Assembly invigilate through guidance of Articles 33 to 38.

Chapter VII From Article 39 to 51, this Chapter outlines practices and regulations to follow when dealing with issued threats against peace. It is termed as Action with Respect to Threats to the Peace, Breaches to the Peace and Acts of Aggression (Schweigman, 2001).Chapter VIII Three Articles describing Regional Arrangements are contained in this Chapter, with intentions of peace and security among member states being emphasized. Chapter IX Up to Article 60, this Chapter contains Articles detailing on economic and social cooperation among member states.

Chapter X Articles 61 to 72 explain the composition, functions and powers, voting and procedure of the Economic and Social Council in detail.Chapter XI This Chapter devoted Article 73 and 74 for the purpose of outlining regulations of dealing with non-self-governing territories which could attract contestation among member and non member states.Chapter XII International Trusteeship System is outlined under Article 75 to Article 85 contained in this Chapter.Chapter XIII Another organ, the Trusteeship Council is defined regarding its composition, functions and powers, voting and procedure under Articles 86 to 91.

Chapter XIV The ICJ is explained in this Chapter and its legal jurisdiction likewise clearly defined under Articles 92 to 96.Chapter XV The Secretariat detail on composition, sittings, functions and staff duties are contained in this Chapter from Article 97 to 101.Chapter XVI Miscellaneous Provisions are contained in Articles 102 to 105 under this Chapter (UN, n.d).Chapter XVIIChapter XVI outlines transitional security regulations using Articles 106 and 107 for peace and dispute resolution. Chapter XVIIIArticles 108 and 109 explain procedure to be used for amending the Charter as contained in this Chapter.
