Music Paper- Dave Matthews’ “Funny the way it is” As a Dave Matthews fanatic, it is overly interesting to listen to the song “Funny the way it is”. This is the foremost single released from DMB’s studio album. This track if pitted with overt tragedy, probably due to the previous year’s demise of Groogrux king, who was the initial founder. Notably, his passionate contributions are expressed in this moody yet tempo-up song. Moreover, this masterpiece is one of the most factual and outspoken songs written by Matthew’s band. Foremost, with the aid of as uncommonly straight-forward language, the Matthews band applies tragic irony, paradox that is representational and imagery in a bid to express the infinite struggle by human beings in pursuit of joy and the horrific occurrences underlying the extent of discontent in the society (Wvu.edu). Additionally, the Matthew’s band inculcates multiple techniques in order to express their notions. They apply the concealed devices that allude to the other techniques through the entire masterpiece. They apply paradoxical statements, irony and oxymoron to expound on their notions. In a bid to express a contradictory notion, the band inculcates ironic imagery, paradox and mood departure as a refrain to express their sentiments in the song (Hayes). Notably, the application of imagery in the song kicks off in the beginning of the song where a picture of kids lying in a magnificent park on a beautiful day with sun shining on the grass is displayed. Then, the imagery translates immediately to that of a siren blaring and a house blazing (Wvu.edu). This notion of imagery is purely ironic since a listener does not imagine of houses blazing and a beautiful day occurring consecutively. The emergent contrast between the two instances is pertinent. Another instance of ironic imagery is in the 3rd verse where two different people are involved, one enjoying a meal and the other starving. The eventual instance of ironic imagery is the one in the sixth verse where it espouses a kid trekking ten miles to school while another drops out (Lildrizzle). Mood is somehow a longer lasting emotion or feeling that differs from simple feelings in that they are not as intense and specific. The refrain inculcates a mood departure by altering the melody and the notions depicted in the song, comparing them to the present day life (Wvu.edu). The refrain happens both in the middle and towards the end of the song. It alters the mood completely since the music increases tempo and the words are projected closer together for the need of implying that there are a lot of words that are spoken in a limited time. In the line asserting the persona standing on top of a bridge and watching the water flow under them depicts imagery and additionally alludes to the notion that the world changes rapidly as the water flows. Moreover, the idea that the world is little greatly contributes to the mood departure since when one contemplates on the world they would not think small though if one makes a comparison of the present and the past world illustrated in the music it really appears small (Lildrizzle). Though the change is brief, the mood departs drastically and is really pertinent to the mood in the music, since it invokes the listener to halt and think or contemplate. An inborn contradictory statement that may be perceived true or probable or rather paradoxical is applied in the entire Band’s song. Notably, when one initially approaches this, they would think that it would not possibly be factual (Hayes). However, after examining it and contemplating deeply about how the two notions expressed may be equal or comparable, they would conclude that it is factual, which is paradoxical. In addition, the idea of the song being a war song and a further depiction of the need of being friends is yet another paradox. Moreover, another paradox is evident at another instance when the band alludes to the notion that a soldier’s last breath is evident when their child is born. In such a case it is unbelievable to hear that a soldier’s last breath coincides to the time when their child is being delivered. However, the exact meaning of the statement is that the death of the soldier is a void that their baby fills after their demise (Lildrizzle). The eventual paradoxical instance in the song is the aforementioned issues regarding the small world. The notion of something as huge as the world being tiny appears unusual on mentioning it (Wvu.edu). This draws someone’s attention to the huge things that the world contains, though it becomes evident that Matthew’s band may mean that the world is small for another reason other the abstract material. In addition, Matthew’s band inculcates numerous concealed devices and techniques through their entire song. Considering paradoxes and how they contain factual attributes and their requirement for a lot of contemplation is completely employed in their masterpiece (Wvu.edu). Moreover, they apply vivid examples that are easily picked out and are overly important in instilling an impact in the song itself and those who listen to it. Speaking in a contradictory manner, the Matthew’s song has imbedded irony, imagery, refrain with mood departure and paradoxical techniques to depict the major theme of the song, as its title suggests (Hayes). The song successfully employs different examples that comprise of ironic and paradoxical situations with stark and straightforward imagery to depict to their audiences that good and evil are often a pair and move parallel. If an audience pays careful attention to the song, the seemingly simple song bears in-depth meanings and generally comments on the society and how people conceive that ultimate joy and happiness is attainable by everyone (Wvu.edu). The diverse paradoxes employed in the song compare contrasting instances in multiple channels, while showing connections between them. Therefore, they tend to conclude that life in the present times can be funny the way it occurs. Thematically, the song suggests that life occurrences have no perfect rhythm or credible reason; everything that occurs in life is merely random. The suggestion that life is not that complicated sends a notion that being indifferent and carefree may be the next option (Hayes). Moreover, the song does not seem to follow a linear path but the artist expresses random stories which are pitted with paradox, imagery and mood departure. Individually, people ought not to complicate life by organizing the small details in life. They would find life enjoyable if they disregarded the small details, since it is a small world (Lildrizzle). Works Cited Wvu.edu. The Chaos within Order, Funny the Way it is by Dave Matthews Band.
