Personal Philosophy of Leadership Personal Philosophy of Leadership Philosophy Mission ment I am a committed nursewhose mission is to partner with patients, my peers, and families to deliver the best patient care, education, and research. This means producing remarkable services for groups, families, communities, people with diverse health needs, and patients. To give caring services that is of high quality and safe and be an exceptional leader in contributing to compassionate and care that focuses on the special needs of parents and families. My nursing care is guided by the needs of my clients as I contribute to curing, treatment and prevention of diseases. I am also committed to foster an environment that nurtures positive communication, collaboration and respect among all participants including my peers, families, and healthcare team as a whole. My desire is to give cultural sensitive care services with the understanding that every individual has his or her own worldviews. Ex 1: My Leadership Values Integrity: This is the act of respecting moral wholeness and dignity of others without any limitations or conditions Excellence: This is the act of generating and executing transformative strategies with bold inspiration. Caring: I understand caring as promotion of hope, healing, and health to an ailing person and their families. Diversity: This involves accepting that people are different, and they hold different values and ideas and that they have different ethnic backgrounds. Community service: This involves giving back to the community through our skills and specialized knowledge. Ex 2: Leadership Assumptions 1. Positive experience There was a time I was put under care of an old man who was suffering diabetes. On one of my daily visits to his hospital room, I found him kissing a younger person than him. I was somehow disturbed, but I remembered my core value in diversity as a nurse leader. I respected his differences, tried not to be discriminative, and cared for him for the common good. Negative experience I experienced negative leadership when one of my former clients called me and told me that her husband had an accident. On behalf of the hospital, I sent some flowers to console her. On realizing that I had made a decision of sending flowers to her, the chief executive nurse was furious because I had not consulted him. He was one person who did not allow subordinates to make decisions. 2. In my definition, leadership involves helping other people achieve their potential, being inspirational, and being an advocate for positive change. This is attained through effective and innovative practices. 3. By giving quality care for patients and their families, I came to realize that by being inspirational and helpful, many of them faired well with treatment to the point of being cured. However, even if they died, their families were positive about it. That is when I realized the leadership is not all about commanding and delegating; it involves influencing the life of a person in a positive way. 4. My leadership definition is influenced by Frankfort regional medical Center Frankfort in Kentucky, whose mission statement is “to compassionately deliver quality health care in an innovative and efficient manner” (Frankfort Regional Medical Center, 2007). Exercise 3: Understanding My Leadership Beliefs 1. People who cause harm to others can be leaders but not effective leaders. I believe that being harmful to others cannot make a good leader. 2. Leaders should have what it takes to be a leader. I believe that leaders should have various attributes to become effective leaders. 3. I believe that leaders need not be chosen, their behaviors set an example to others. 4. Leaders gain credibility by living their own values, recognizing others, having a strong sense of humility, and having a strong character. I believe that being a credible leader have the ability to live their own values, recognize others, have humility and have a strong character. 5. Good leadership influences people positively. I believe that leadership is good because it influences others in a positive way. 6. The purpose of leadership is to inspire and motivate other for successful achievement of a common goal. I believe that leadership provides inspiration and motivation to achieve a common goal. 7. Both individual experiences and peripheral forces cause leadership behavior.
