The movie has aspects of discrimination in the case where Reich engages in humor that is self-deprecating. There are glimpses about the torture and bullying that he passed through because of his size. There is also an aspect of discrimination in the event where the bigger boys like Michael Schwerner protect him from the bullies (Dungan, Kornbluth, 2013).
I think the movie represents inequalities in the USA in power and interpersonal relations. From my understanding of politics, the case of Michael protecting the victim of the bully is a symbol of the way an ordinary American undergoes prejudice from fellow Americans who are in better positions of power. It depicts America as a society encompassed with social exclusion and inequalities in all sectors of the economy. From my own experience, politicians play a massive role in either eliminating social exclusion and using power in the rightful way or destroying the pillars of the same.
