A leader nurse takes responsibility and guides the staff in accordance to the nurse ethics. A nurse leader identifies the strength of other staff members and utilizes to create an effective model (Kelly, 2012).
Management on the other hand is an elective or appointed position. A manager works based on goals set by an entity, a successful manager is one who performs according to expectation (Kelly, 2012). Management in this case is authoritative. Consultations are done on a horizontal basis. A manager defers form a leader in the manner in which decisions is arrived at. A manager works with an aim of improving the quality and output while leader works on the negatives and work on them to ensure an appropriate working environment is created (Marquis & Huston, 2014).
In some cases the two functions may overlap. In this case an authoritative manager may have the traits that qualify him as a leader. The manager works with the available staff while leaders work on their negative and motivate them towards better performance. He ensures the external and internal environments are functional and are effective to ensure quality performance (AANAC, 2013). The aim is to create an individual leadership portfolio from which it would be possible to reflect on my professional and personal growth by integrating the two theories, models and practices. The focus would be to identify and highlight the different leadership qualities and the basis on which they can be classified as per the leadership styles.
Introduction “Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (Northouse, 2010, p3). This seem to suggest that leadership is about the ability of individuals to cause people to move from point A to point B as a part of a wider set of objectives and goals.
Introduction The study of leadership has been in existence for a long time in a bid to understand what makes a good leader. While leadership theories and concepts continue to evolve, there are numerous trends that symbolize leadership thought over the 19th through the 21st century.
Unlike the notion of management, the concept of leadership is rooted in more profound meanings that are of pertinence to a business. Robbins (2001) understands that while, good management relates to the execution of various functions such as planning and organizing within the context of an organization, effective leadership encompasses the alignment and amalgamation of vision, objectives and direction to inspire employees and assist them during the implementation of change management strategies.
It tries to validate the idea that in order to be effective, an organisation must not only possess a proper 'fit' with the environment but also between its subsystems of hierarchies. It states that the requirements of organisations obtain optimum functionality when the processes of action and implementation in the organisation is effectively designed and the management style is responsive and appropriate simultaneously to the tasks undertaken and the nature of the work group.
This is why human history is full of good or bad leaders. Good leaders like George Washington, Winston Churchill, or Mahatma Gandhi accomplished great things, while bad leadersthere are too many of them who did actions so bad that I do not feel their names should even be mentioned.
Leadership skills and knowledge, however, processed by a leader. These leadership skills and knowledge mainly influenced by beliefs, character, values, and ethics; these factors contribute to leadership process. Leadership process has four principal factors that are the leader, situation, communication, and followers.
