Personal Reflection on Importance of Nursing Theory Personal Reflection on Importance of Nursing Theory The nursing theories discussed in chapter 4 have some concepts, models, prepositions, and definitions that involve making assumptions. Self-Care Theory by Dorothea E. Orem is my theory of interest which describes the functions of human body system depends on developed human structures. Everybody should have proper mental and bodily functioning. In her theory, social, physical, interpersonal, and psychological aspects are used to describe it fully.

Her assumptions concern that every individual should be responsible and self-reliant for his or her care. Additionally, he or she should care for his or her relatives (Orem, 2003). Promotion of self-care behaviors is one of the reasons to choose Orem’s theory because if people are educated on how to take care of themselves and those of others, there could be created sociality amongst people. Mortality rate may decrease, as many ill and sick patients could be easily identified and taken care off for wellbeing.

The second reason to choose Self-Care Theory is that it helps people to understand more about their body organs and their functions. Trainees, such as nurses can learn how different organs operate and suitable care or medication may require if sickness or fractures occur. Studying Orem’s theory can psychologically change people to give helping services to others. If someone cares for somebody, he or she should help that person financially, socially, or by giving ideas on how to resolvethe problems (Orem, 2003).

The fourth reason for considering Orems theory is that it can be used to develop skills and knowledge on how to live in a healthy environment. If people take care of themselves, then it is guaranteed they should live in a clean environment with minimal contaminations. Hygiene is critically observed in food and fruits before cooking or consuming. Wastes should be handled and disposed properly in required areas to avoid pollutions. Self-Care Theory can help Registered Nurses (RN) in practice, education, and in a research organization.

The nurse theory can assist RN to explain, predict, and describe daily experiences that arise concerning self-caring or while caring for others. RN can be guided in assessing and evaluating favorable nursing cares essential for healthcare services and treatment. The theory can be used to collect data on the clients health status and be used by RN in making nursing decisions and implementing them (Orem, 2003). Nurses gain terminologies that are useful in communication within healthcare organization or institutions.

If registered nurses study the theory, they are capable of developing ideas and clearly define some words. The theory can assist RN to have autonomy of nursing by considering its functions of providing care to the patients and other people. Orem’s theory can assist me as a registered nurse in doing research on how to develop self-care behaviors in a hospital or health organization, as well as, amongst the public. Using her theoretical concept, I can generate new ideas, skills, and knowledge essential in advancing my career as a nurse.

If a research is done appropriately, it is possible to identify knowledge gaps in Orem’s theory and provide a methodical approach to identifying questions for study. It can be done through selecting some variables, validating nursing interventions, and interpreting findings. Ideas can be borrowed from other disciplines for conceptual frameworks and assist nursing practice among the RN (Orem, 2003). Any additional research conducted about the Self-Care Theory can be used to improve it and make it more updated than it is.
