6 May, Addicted to Plastic Reflection: This video explains the significance of plastic as a material and its usability. Plastic is a very popular material and is used for making almost everything. It can be flexible like a shopping bag and can be stiff enough to make large water tanks. It can be moulded in every shape. However, it becomes extremely dangerous for environmental health and safety if it is not properly deposited after use. It is toxic and can cause many health problems. The best way to treat used plastic is to recycle and reuse it.

This is the only solution to pollution as well as depletion of plastic resources. I liked the idea that plastic can be made from proteins in the feathers of hens. Poultry is one of the biggest food industries all over the world. Every day, hundreds of millions of hens are slaughtered in every part of the world. Disposing their feathers off is a big problem and they have conventionally been thrown away in rubbish heaps. A large volume of the total rubbish heap comprises the remnants of slaughtered hens.

If the practice of making plastic from hens’ feathers is done on a large scale, we can find a good source of plastic in addition to the natural resources. Another thing that I particularly admired was when that woman said, “Here we have, a 100 per cent recycled plastic jacket!” (“Addicted to Plastic”). Had somebody seen the raw materials of those jackets, he/she would never want to put it on! But after treatment, the jacket looks simply awesome. This speaks of the power of plastic. Unfortunately, plastic is gotten rid of in the most unwise way.

Some people throw empty bottles in sewerage lines, streams or rivers. This is not only wastage of plastic, but also the fundamental source of pollution. I hate to find plastic bottles floating in water that should supposedly be clean because it is used for domestic purposes. I totally agree that the bulk of plastic thrown in land fills will become the plastic mines for future generations. I agree that use of plastic should be minimized to the maximum extent, though no matter what impacts it has on the environment, its use is inevitable because almost everything is made up of plastic.

Nonetheless, I agree to the fact that “there are more things that we don’t know than we do know” (“Addicted to Plastic”). Therefore, we should be very prudent in our treatment of plastic after it has been used! Although the movie does not change my view of the world, yet it inspires me to play my role in putting wasted plastic to positive use. From this point in time onwards, I plan to pick up plastic bottles, moulds, pots, toys and everything that is scattered on the road, and get them deposited in plastic recycling bins.

I shall make sure that I am doing my bit to make plastic available to the future generations. Plastic is a material that retains its quality and properties over time and can be recycled and reused infinitely. All that is required to achieve this is the effort from the society both on an individualistic and the collective level. Works Cited: Addicted to Plastic Trailer. 2009, Film. 6 May 2011. .
