B: Well, I think I’ll catch up with time. I know a couple of my friends who are not doing any better. A: You’re right, it was difficult for me too but after a few months, I started catching up. I am sure that things will be better soon. Conversation 2 A: Good morning. B: Good morning. How can I help you? A: I’m a new student here. Besides, I’m interested in learning how to play chess. I saw the announcement about the new student chess club last evening and I thought that I should see you for help.

B: Oh, the advertisement! You are in the right place. Yes, we are registering new students who are interested in learning chess. Well, do you have any prior experience? A: Mmmh, I would say that I only have a basic understanding of the rules of the game; that is all. B: I see. So, you can tell the difference between a mate and a checkmate, right? A: Yes, I can do that. B: That is fine. Now, have you ever played a full game with a friend or anyone else? A: Yes, I have had a couple of games with some of my friends.

I must admit that they are way better than me: I lost all the games. B: Look, you don’t have to feel that way. It’s normal for a newbie to lose all the games at first but I can assure you that with time, you will get better. Don’t be surprised when you give some of your friends a fool’s mate soon! A: I’d be delighted to get to that level. Now, is there anything special about the club that I need to know? B: Nothing. I think you’ll fill in this form here and that will be all.

We shall communicate to you the dates and venues of our meetings. A: Thank you so much. Conversation 3 A: Hi. Are you still homesick? B: Hi. Yes, I am still feeling homesick; however, I am getting better, given that my family called me yesterday. A: Oh, did they? It must have been relieving, given that you had missed them for a long time. B: You can say that again, Anne. It was late at night when my mom finally called me on WhatsApp. I can’t say how exciting it was to talk to my younger siblings.

It was early morning back at home and they were preparing for school at the time. A: I am really glad to hear that. You see, things can be quite hard for you here at the start but they always get better. B: Exactly. But then, how do you manage, if I may ask? Don’t you ever miss your people back at home? A: Well, I do miss them! There are nights when I read emails and other messages from them and feel like crying. But I think that I have learned to focus on my studies so much that I do not dwell on them so much.
