Instead of putting their jobs and responsibilities aside until a later time, the Japanese would do them as soon as they found the opportunity. In contrast to other people, they would not go home. Their spirit has a great and noticeable difference when compared to the many other countries that I have visited. The Japanese’s attitude to work has strongly impressed in my mind one very important thing: persistence. It is persistence that is behind the drive of the Japanese to be successful, and it has also become my driving force. Taiwan had been colonized by Japan for fifty years when my grandparents were born. They were educated by the Japanese and became deeply influenced by the Japanese culture. In order to communicate with my grandparents, I had to learn some simple Japanese to be able to communicate with them. Meanwhile, the interest that I had of the Japanese culture and the language led me to a greater interest to self-study the Japanese language and culture. My grandparents, especially my grandfather, encouraged my desire to learn and understand the Japanese culture. Between their encouragement and my person interest, I was able to comprehend the importance and benefits of persistence. Now, every time that I start to speak in Japanese, it always reminds me of many unforgettable memories between me and the death of my grandfather, who remains to be one of my greatest inspirations for pursing knowledge of and living the Japanese culture. Holding tight to the persistence of the Japanese working spirits, I succeeded in becoming a vice president of my high school’s Taiwanese Student Association and a member of the Japanese Culture Club. Being a leader, I have cooperated with the president and all of the other officers to hold a Halloween event with the Japanese Culture Club in order to have a better understanding of the local American culture. At the same time, while most of the Taiwanese and Japanese students were learning about the American culture, they were also able to make informational exchanges about the Taiwanese culture and Japanese culture. For the sake of spreading the Taiwanese and Japanese cultures, I worked really hard to achieve our collective goal of putting this Halloween event together. We were successful and more than three hundred and fifty people came to the event. Through all the hard working, the continuous preparations and organizations, and especially through persistence, the event we held turned out to be incredibly successful. Question 2: What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement. Since a very young age, I found myself to have a great potential in languages. I can speak multiple languages due to my family’s decision to move to Guangdong Province to do lighting business when I was just five years old. During those busy times, my father asked me to be his assistant. My job was to interpret from English or Cantonese into Mandarin, Cantonese or Taiwanese to his partners or employees. During the moment when I tried my absolute best to use Japanese to demonstrate the products to the Japanese customers, my father and I found that ... Read More
