Medical Oath Oath Declaration: I promise to do my best in serving human beings by caring for the sick and promoting good health I understand that the practice of medicine is a privilege with enormous responsibility, and I promise not to abuse my position I will practice medicine with honesty, humility and integrity by working with my fellow colleagues to meet the patient’s needs I will never intentionally administer anything that will harm my patients I will not allow gender consideration, political affiliation and sexual orientation to influence or cloud my judgment I will promote medical knowledge by teaching and doing extensive research. I will help my patience to make informed choices that coincide with their values and beliefs. I make this declaration freely and promise to uphold with utmost sincerity and honesty Analysis: The first part of my oath starts with my pledge to serving humanity and care for the sick by promoting good health care. This is an important pledge because humanity is the most precious species and whether doing something minor or major a person should be careful. This oath is not applicable to people undertake medical courses for getting better pay. I believe that the oath is only applicable to people who are dedicated to serve humanity. It is very difficult to come up with an oath that will be accepted by everyone in his or her graduation class. Hippocratic Oath starts by “I do solemnly swear vow, to which that I value and hold most dear”, this applies to a universal way of writing an oath but for the Muslims they can not pledge this way because they can only swear by the name of God. For this reasons, it is difficult to come up with a universal law hence Oaths should be within small regions. The second part of my Oath is my understanding of medical practice as a privilege with enormous responsibility and promise not to abuse it. This is because most people do not have a calling in pursuing medical work because it is very stressful. A person needs to have courage, strength and wisdom while dealing with medical cases. I started the Oath with this pledge because I am dedicated to be able to carry one with this profession even if science is always advancing and changing. Therefore, I have set boundaries and limitation to the extent I should carry out my medical work. It is because of this that I am dedicated to my patients and profession because not many people have the privilege to serve humanity. This has led me to vow things that I have dedicated to do as a physician, which is more of a declaration of my responsibilities to serve my patients and the community at large. I pledge to practice medicine with honesty, humility and integrity by working with my fellow colleagues to meet the patient’s needs. This is because taking care of patients needs people who are working as a team. I will uphold my integrity and give correct results to my colleges for coming up with correct conclusion of the patient’s analysis. It is unjust to hold patients information from colleagues because this can lead to deterioration of a patient’s health. I have written this oath by starting with “I” instead of “We” because I believe Oath taking is a personal thing. This will make it serious since every individual will be personally saying the Oath. When a person is speaking himself, he/she tends to take the matter seriously. This will influence an individual to take this professional seriously and swear by that one thing that he holds sacred. I pledge not allow gender consideration, political affiliation and sexual orientation to influence or cloud my judgment. This is because people from different race have a right to access medical care without discrimination. It is also inappropriate to treat patients by giving favors on the basis of their sex. A medical should not have any intimate relationship with his patient because this is likely to cloud her judgment I vow never to intentionally administer anything that will harm the health of the patient. Even with the patient’s request to end his life I will not engage in such conduct. This is because I believe that only God has a right to end life since he is the creator of life. I will also advise my patients on the correct mode of treatment and give them the correct medical advice in case they are stranded. During my vow section, I have learn to accept death after trying to my level best to save a life. I also have decided to provide equal services and care to my patients without being influenced by wealth or race. The work of a doctor is to prevent and treat diseases. I as a doctor will minimize personal feelings, effects of inconvenience and financial consideration that will cloud my judgment in putting the patient’s welfare above all considerations. It is my responsibility to view all patients as equal despite their background despite their background. It is my responsibility to uphold the patients trust by ensuring there is honesty in all dealings. I believe that openness is the first rule in taking care of a patient. When a patient feels that, the doctor is not fully honest he is likely to show signs of fear. It my responsibility to act as an educator by informing and teaching my patients as well as telling them the benefits and risks associated with treatment. As a physician, I will not disclose any information without the permission of the patient or his agent. It is my responsibility to make medical opinions based on facts and reasoning but not from outside influence such as attorneys. I will not indulge in any abuse of substances that might impair my judgment. It is also my responsibility to stop other doctors who are abuse substances because their judgment is impaired. Everyone has ideas on how taking medical oath can be changed to be a better place for patients. People have ideas on coming up with programs and policies that can be used in the transformation of the health industry to better places for treating patients. Human advocacy is individual and collective ideas of people that can be transformed by medical practitioners to more general ideas that are accepted by everyone in the establishment of a affirmative health care and social change. Health advocacy is where medical practitioners integrate ethics, social life and politics to better the life of patients by advising them to make informed choices that will better their health. I believe that doctors who do not have reverence of life should not be in medical practice. It is my obligation to choose life over death except under limited circumstances. These circumstances include ending of one person’s life to save the life of another person. In case of futile care especially in situations where care will only increase pain and suffering or where there is no hope for a patient to return to awareness. Life can also be ended when a competent agent or trusted agent refuse to take medicine. The issues of life and death are supposed to be settled in accordance to ethical principles of beneficence to an individual basis and are not supposed to be resolved by blanket fashion by religious command. Medical oaths have referred to the source of medical ethics through centuries. There has been a new consensus on ethics since 1960 is to apply to new medical problems. The consensus was founded on the ideologies of integrity and respect of the patient’s autonomy. These principles are supposed to respect the confidentially and veracity of the patient. Hippocratic Oath underlines the principles of confidentiality, beneficence and non-maleficence. These principles are included in different medical schools in Canada, USA and United Kingdom. The rule of confidentiality is the most mentioned followed by principles of justice and beneficence. I believe that patient’s health is the priority concern. The work of a doctor is to prevent and treat diseases. There are raising concerns that have been brought about by modern medical practice which has resulted in conflicting demands of medical officers. There are pressures from other third parties that do not have the interests of the patients at heart. The Oath has been modified many times by different countries. A recent revision is the declaration of Geneva that was drafted by world medical association. Currently there is no legal obligation for medical students to take an Oath. I as a doctor will live up a straight life in my society and show a good model to other people. I will not shrink from helping other people and I will show compassion to people who are not well of and those suffering from poverty. It is my responsibility to show humility, reverence to life and show empathy to person who is not well off. It is my responsibility as a doctor to ensure that I maintain maximum physical and mental well being. I realize that I have some limitations that might lead to misfortunes hence i need to maximize both physical and mental wellbeing.
