Immigration – Causes and Effects a. Immigration is a process in which people travel from one country to another for a long period. i. Legal immigration means that people have all their documents signed and they owned valid visas or green cards (Flores 87). ii. Illegal immigration is to enter a country without meeting the visa requirements and other formalities (Douglas et al 32). b. One of the main reasons why people migrate to places such as the US or UK is survival and desire to acquire better living i. The US constitution plays a big part in encouraging this act too, since they claim that everyone holds equal rights and that liberty, freedom and happiness should be enjoyed by every man on earth. This is a great excuse for these emigrants (Johnson 6). ii. People don’t even have to face the extra burden of paying for school fees if they have school going children, as kindergarten to high school is free there (Douglas et al 32). iii. High demand for labor is also one of the reasons why people migrate illegally (Mark 39). c. One reason why the liberals support the illegal immigrants is due to sympathy i. The US whites who are rich, support these illegals as they think they are handy and can do simple and meaningful jobs for them (Borjas 717). ii. Overpopulation is another problem caused by these heavy numbers of immigrants (Meissner 65). 2. Solution to Illegal Immigration a. In order to solve these problems, a proper plan consisting of the solutions should be passed out by the government i. A border wall should also be built to eliminate the flow of people into the country in an undocumented fashion (Antle 65). ii. A patrol should be assigned on every mile of the border (Gregg 4). b. Illegal Immigration is high in Arizona where almost half of the population are illegal aliens i. They should either be fined, given community services or a blue card which determines that they can stay legally but not get citizenship (Johnson 6). ii. Indeed illegal immigration is a big problem; hence it needs to be overcome otherwise there might be no difference between a developed and an under-developed country (Borjas 717). Now, since the world is changing daily, the methods of migration are also changing. Immigrants enter countries by either showing fake green cards or walking 3-5 days to some other state or city. People with expired visas live in other countries too. Since the world population is growing drastically, people are eager to get the best share of resources and facilities, which is why they keep a close eye on successful countries such as the USA and wait for a possible chance of getting there, without actually doing or paying much for (Douglas et al 32). Causes of Immigration: One of the main reasons why people migrate to places such as the US or UK, is because they offer everything a man needs, to survive. They have schools, colleges, hospitals, offices, business and job opportunities, resources of all kind and what not. The US is known as “a nation of immigrants”. People from different countries of various races come here for different purposes. Either a typical Chinese comes to work or a modern European comes to boost his wealth and escape persecution in his country. Either way, one can escape from being charged with punishment of illegal immigration, because the US has over more than 10 million undocumented immigrants. In places like Mexico, the government is very corrupt and so is the whole state which is why it is the land with the most unstable condition and illegal immigrants. All a person needs to do in order to live peacefully in southern America is learn, Latin or Spanish and that person is fit for the community. People support the idea of open borders and claim the right to migrate which is why Mexico is one of the most unlawful states in the whole of United States. People from lower socio-economic countries tend to migrate to countries with higher socio-economic circumstances because there they have chances of attaining a better life, more economic opportunities and living conditions are better. People can plan and act on those plans since resources of all kind are at their reach. Job opportunities and the pay they offer are what attract these immigrants to developed countries. Not only are there high position jobs for the rich but there are all sorts of jobs available for the poor as well. It’s better to have a job and earn something, even if it’s not much. Developed countries like the US offer this as the middle and high class requires services and so do the huge amount of tourists that visit these countries. This way everybody has a chance of doing something, rather than just sitting and waiting for aid and help. High demand for labour is also one of the reasons why people migrate illegally. Native citizens who do not wish to do unskilled jobs, regardless of the wages, cause a structural demand for labour. They fill in the economic gap. Jobs such as harvesting or growing crops, building providing services etc are carried out well by even unskilled labour and this is what attracts the foreigners most (Mark 39). A family plan can easily be carried out here. People usually want to reunite with their beloved family members’ which is why they do whatever it takes to meet them, even migrating illegally or families migrate together for the sake of their children’s future. World poverty can also be the result to huge amounts of immigrants coming to developed countries. Income is higher and so is the standard of living. Since the people are poor, migrating illegally is a great option for them and if they have family links there, that is even better for them. Usually in under-developed countries, the land is overpopulated. This causes problems and deficiency in resources such as water, land and causes pollution, unemployment etc. The land becomes jam packed and so the standard of living drops (Douglas et al 32). Another reason why people migrate is to escape from the oppression and violence caused by war. The war going on in Afghanistan has caused millions of refugees to flee to Pakistan, illegally. When this happened, they brought weapons and arms and harmful, addictive drugs with them. So in return Pakistan suffered because of the terrorism and violence caused by the millions of refugees that entered. Acts such as bullying, persecution, abusing, provokes the people into migrating to a better and stable place. One in ten Colombians lives abroad because of the years of armed conflicts. Crime rate in these underdeveloped countries is very high. People will strive to get anything to save themselves or their family. This fear is also the reason for people to migrate to a richer country where these acts don’t occur too often. Countries like the US and the UK offer quality education to its people. The colleges there are well known around the world and some of the successful and famous people we see or hear about are usually college graduates from those well known colleges. Every parent wants their child to get the best education which is why people usually send their children abroad. When their student cards or visas expire, they continue to study and live there because normally they are alone and the only place they can stay is in their hostels so it can be said that thousands of students who go to study abroad, in fact are living there illegally. Why people support Illegal immigration: One reason why the liberals support the illegal immigrants is due to sympathy. Many people think it is cruel that the immigrants have to be separated from their families. People also support them because they believe in open borders, the right to migrate and freedom. As America is the world super power and the country that has to retain world peace, people take advantage of their position and so, majority of people migrates there. The US whites who are rich, support these illegals as they think they are handy and can do simple and meaningful jobs for them whereas the poor US whites despise them because they think they are a burden to the country and that they are trying to take over the jobs and resources which are meant for them. Party leaders also encourage this act because of their greed to get more votes and win the support of the immigrants as they are millions in number (Borjas 717). Problems caused by Illegal immigration: Like every development, illegal immigration has consequences. Problems like slavery, prostitution and death are very common thanks to this problem. Even though the slave trade between Europe and America in the 19th century had finished, slave trade is still being continued in minor numbers, increasing slowly. People especially women are smuggled into America and Canada. People have been tricked or kidnapped into working as slaves especially in factories. Since these people already hold the status of being illegal immigrants, they are forced to work otherwise they must face the police. Either way they are in dilemma. Some people are forced into sexual slavery. They are either kidnapped or trafficked into other countries or they work then and there. Exposure to the heat in the US-Mexico border in the desert while travelling or punishments given to these immigrants can sometimes cause thousands of deaths (Flores 87). Overpopulation is another problem caused by these heavy numbers of immigrants. If there is overpopulation, then more and more resources of that state will be consumed. This will lead to shortage of water, power, land, jobs etc. The same thing that happens in under-developed countries will also start taking place in these developed countries which will cause big problems (Meissner 65). Solution for Illegal immigration: In order to solve these problems, a proper plan consisting of the solutions should be passed out by the government. All immigrants should undergo simple tests in which their backgrounds are checked. If they have caused no problems then they can return and live peacefully. Visa and green cards should be checked strictly and the airport security should be alert and secure the whole time, keeping an eye on those mischiefs’s who enter or leave without proper documentation and checking. They US should keep a close eye on Mexico and help them with their poverty, social services and corrupt government. Maybe it should be made the 51st state, just so that relations could be made better. Since the government cannot be fully trusted, a quitam facility should be launched in which private citizens are allowed to sue those employers who employ illegal immigrants. Any illegal immigrants captured or discovered in the United States should be permanently banned from legal immigration. A border wall should also be built to eliminate the flow of people into the country in an undocumented fashion (Antle 65). A patrol should be assigned on every mile of the border. Those who are not aware of the laws will definitely break them so, they should be checked thoroughly too. This issue should be given a lot of thought, not just by the politicians, but also by the people. Posting a blog or uploading a video based on this topic would help motivate people to take action to overcome this problem and bring about a change. Maybe the immigrants themselves might feel ashamed and would want to stop what they’re doing. Either way, the people of these developed countries have to stand up (Gregg 4). In Arizona almost half of the population are illegal aliens. This is why the government has introduced the ‘Safe passage’. Either the immigrant leaves freely and peacefully or he suffers punishment. Because of this law, millions of people left without hesitation, only those who were well established and had school-going children had a few issues in leaving. Though immigration has resulted in overpopulation, it has brought benefits to the country as well. People who often migrate to a developed nation, do good, are committed and talented and have been at some point very productive citizens of their own nations as well. This is why the congress should encourage the idea of immigration. But to have legal immigrations of people, there must be certain reforms made. The borders need to be secured, talented people should be allowed to come here and work at jobs that are not performed by the US natives themselves. There should be harsher punishments for those employers who hire or encourage hiring illegally for their own benefits. The US should invite and welcome smart and talented people from all over the globe to come and work here and those who are already studying here should be given kind hospitality so that they stay and contribute to the country’s well-being and prosperity. The illegal aliens should be dealt in a more humane way. It is not possible to deport millions of immigrants, which is why they should either be fined, given community services or a blue card which determines that they can stay legally but not get citizenship (Johnson 6). Indeed illegal immigration is a big problem; hence it needs to be overcome otherwise there might be no difference between a developed and an under-developed country (Borjas 717). This problem is not frequently discussed which is why the people should try and shine some light on this topic to raise awareness and put an end to this crime. It will take time as there are millions of illegals living in the States, but if action is taken now, then this problem won’t occur in the future. The Americans need to develop a policy which will make them more competitive, add to the economy and culture and continue to lift the standards of the people and the country itself.
