?What is a Learning Journal Learning journal is a personal collection of thoughts, observation and s which is produced over a period of time which is a result of work or learning experience. The purpose of learning journal of is to enhance a person’s learning experience through thinking and writing process. Learning journal is a personal possession and can reflect preference, personality and experiences. Learning journal is a part of most academic studies as it helps a student in learning process. In social psychology there are many concepts and ideas which need to be understood deeply for which learning journal is highly beneficial. It also helps in recording social events and experiences which can be related studies and can be analyzed while learning. Social psychology is a study which needs contemplation and comprehension at greater levels and learning journal helps to revise the ideas studied and personal outcomes of learning. Learning journal also improves the application of social psychology to life and behavior of a society which is a practical knowledge. This assignment has been greatly helpful in understanding many concepts and ideas of social psychology. I understood how a human psychology works and how it leads to difference in the personality of a person and behavior. This assignment helped to realize the depth of human emotions and their value in life and relationship. The way in which the society behaves and the reasons for their biased actions and reactions were also identified. It also allowed me to learn the role of people and how different personalities can change the face of the society. What is self esteem? Self esteem is an integral part of a personality. Self esteem is the self worth of a person or personal value. Self esteem is a personality trait which is essential in a person. It is not necessary that all people needs to have self esteem as many may lack itself esteem is a stable and enduring quality .Self esteem can be a combination of variety of values, beliefs and concepts of a person. It can be appraisal one one’s own values, beliefs, appearance emotions and behavior. Self esteem consists of three components as following. a) Self esteem is an essential human need. b) Self esteem automatically arises within oneself according to one’s values and belief. c) Self esteem happens in conjunction with a person thoughts, action and behavior. Self esteem is a basic need for human psychology as it gives motivation to a person. People need self respect and also esteem from other people. Self esteem is important in growing one’s personality and reaching self actualization. Self worth, self value and self respect are other words for self esteem. It is an emotional evaluation of a person by others and himself 2.What main ideas and concepts relate to this subject ? One of the main ideas surrounding self – esteem is self bias wherein we take effort to remember information about ourselves. Being self - adaptive, one can savor good things that occur in the life. Knowing about oneself is greatly helpful in upgrading one’s personality. It is understood that people with high self esteem is pride .It helps us to compare with the behavior of others and make productive changes. According to ( Griffin , 2013,pg .68) “Self esteem has it dark side and but also its bright side”. Some other concepts related to it are depression and anxiety. A person with low self esteem- will suffer from depression and anxiety many a times. 3. What short quote from the text or reading illustrates an important point related to this aspect? Wood and other realized the importance of self- serving bias in upgrading self – esteem of a person. According to (Griffin,2013,pg.99.“ When good things happen, people with high self – esteem are more likely to savor and sustain a good feeling”. 4.How is this aspect relevant to my social world? Self – esteem is an important attribute needed in me when I interact with people at different levels of my society. I will be more co – operative and confident in my dealing with others. It will also allow me to respect others and give ideas than can help others. If I am a person with high self esteem I can be more productive and also be more contributing to the society .I also feel that the people Prejudice 1. Which aspect of the topic has interested me the most? Why? The topic which has interested me most is types of prejudices and this is because it has had much to do with the way in which society operates. a) Racism – Racism is a global issue and it is a social concept in which the people are divided into different groups according to their races. For example- People with white skin are Europeans, people with black skin are Africans and people with brown skin are Asians. The personal characteristics of people are taken as a ground to differentiate people. b) Sexism – This is a next common prejudice found in society. This is a prejudice which basically differentiates people on basis of their sexual identity. Sexism is mainly practiced against women in family life, work place and social life. Women are seen as a weaker sex and less eligible for power and recognition. In every culture in the world, women are seen secondary to men. Sexism evolved from the stereotype of gender roles through ages. Sexism is a way by which men dominate women .Men are given more social value and regarded more competent than women. Sexism has been developed to sub ordinate women and control them. Sexism has been a reason for degradation of women in many developing countries. c) Ageism – Ageism is a prevalent prejudice in society wherein the people are discriminated based on their age. It mainly happens towards older people as they are thought to be weak and less of help to society. The people who are children, teenagers, middle agers usually outcast old people and treat them abusively. Youth is more appreciated in society and they are given more opportunity in job and cultural setting. Ageism is a severe problem in developed countries than in other countries. Old people are often taken as a burden by people and are given less privilege throughout life. Usually people who have crossed the age of 60 years are victims of ageism. Ageism is a prejudice which can cause much anxiety, depression and tension to old people. Ageism largely exists in workplace as these employees are given less consideration, promotion and salary. Ageism is a prejudice which hurts people’s dignity, respect and security. It is a violation of human rights and freedom. d) Religious hatred – Religious hatred now has become the most threatening social prejudice which even had led to war between countries. According to this prejudice, the religion is a criterion to distinguish different people. Nowadays, in western countries Islam is considered as a religious prejudice as Muslims are looked upon as terrorist and social radicals. Religious hatred has the potentiality to completed wreck the world peace and harmony. Religious hatred stems from disregard for each other religion and less knowledge about the other religion. Religious hatred is a reason for calamity and violence in many countries where multi – cultures exists. 2. What main ideas and concepts relate to this subject? The main idea that is related to this concept is that prejudice can be implicit or explicit. There are subtle forms of prejudice that many times go unnoticed. Prejudice always have an underlying motive. Some concepts related to types of prejudice are stereotyping, race sensitivity, and equality. It found that stereotyping lead to sexism and race sensitivity trigger racism and equality can erase prejudices. 3. Begenten and Hehman has understood the concept of ageism clearly .According to ( Myers, 2013,pg.292) “People’s perception of elderly- as generally kind but frail, incompetent and unproductive- pred- dispose patronizing behavior, such as baby talk speech that leads elderly people to feel less competent and act less capably” 4. How is this aspect relevant to my social world? Different types of prejudices exist in every corner of the society and it is a part of society in explicit and implicit form. Many of the social issue in the society which I live in can be contributed to prejudices. The problem of old age homes, exploitation of women, social crimes, and conflicts are a result of prejudices. Love 1. Which aspect of the topic has interested me the most? Why? The aspect which has interested me most is what is love? This is because it is the strongest of all human emotions. Love is something all of us might have experience and yet is the most difficult term to define. Love can be of different forms as it can be parental love, brother- sister love or romantic love. Love is definitely an emotion which is the most powerful gift to human species. It could be said that love rules the world and people cannot live without love. Love can be defined as affection and care one has to another and the importance of a person in one’s life. In a romantic love, trust, lust, passion, understanding and respect plays an important role. Attachment is an important part of love and we are intensely connected with the person we are in love. A love between a mother and child is more of care and sacrifice. According to (Myers, 2103,pg.100) “ Love is more complex than liking and thus more difficult to measure, more perplexing to study” Love is a free emotion which cannot to be demanded but only earned. Love is an emotion which has the capability to change a person and persuade a person to do anything. Love has no boundaries and a person in love is happy and peaceful at all times. Love has no conditions but is unlimited and one has to surrender to love and feel it. We cannot force someone to love you or stop someone from loving you. It is often said love is blind and it is a matter of mind and heart. It is a thing to experience rather than dictate. Every person yearns for love and it is the corner stone of all human relationships. Love is emotions which can make people unite and stay as one and can also create peace and harmony in world. Love is the most needed element in life. Even if people are extremely rich a life without love can lead to depression and disaster. 2. What main ideas and concepts relate to this subject? The main idea surrounding love is that it is a complex feeling to describe. Love is also common to all human relationships. Some of the concepts related to love are passion, intimacy and commitment .The love is tied to these concepts and only if these exist then love can be true. 3. What short quote from the text or reading illustrates an important point related to this aspect? Aaron and other have described the true nature of love. According to (Myers, 2013,pg.295)“Unlike the wild emotion of passionate love, companionate love is lower key; it is a deep, affectionate attachment”. 4. How is this aspect relevant to my social world? In my social world love has been the most captivating and enduring feeling. I believe the whole society revolves around love and every relationship I have had with people had a feeling of love in it. I cannot be friendly with a person with having affection or liking towards them. I believe to love people without discrimination is the biggest quality I have. Love is an eternal feeling which can make a person complete and allow people to live freely and peacefully in a society. Conclusion This learning journal has been of enormous value to me as it totally changed my overall experience on learning journal and its application to social psychology. The journal helped to understand the way in which personal experiences can related with studies. It has made me more observant in life and note and identifies things which are applicable to social psychology. My journal is a personal effort and can have many strength and weaknesses. The strength of my learning journal is that is detailed in nature. My journal is more reflective and has many details which are needed for the subject to be comprehensive. My journal is simple in words and is more understandable for readers. My journal is also precise and informative. The weaknesses of my journal are that it lacks information up to the point and is more elaborative. I have not recorded personal experiences in a clear manner and lead to confusion at times. I have also realized that the recordings in the journal have many grammar and spelling mistakes which show my less concentration while writing it. It is also less organized and compact. But I have realized that this assignment has given me benefits which I expected. I have been able to understand human emotions more vividly and clearly. I have understood the differences in human psychology and its impact on society. It has changed my belief about social psychology and made me more knowledgeable and studious.
