Adoption of Distinctive Styles What is Style? Before going into the discussion regarding adoption of distinctive styles, let us get a better understanding of what style actually is. Style is an inner sense to express something in a unique manner. People adopt different styles, which suit their appearance and character in order to become prominent among other individuals. Style is a method or an approach towards doing some task. A stylish approach towards performing some task is one that is timely and cost effective. A person can incorporate style in all fields of his life such as dressing, eating, interacting with other people, or using latest cars. Young people are more interested in adopting distinctive styles as compared to adults. Let us now discuss those factors, which make young people adopt distinctive styles. Why Young People Adopt Distinctive Styles? There are various factors, which make young people adopt distinctive styles in their lives. Some of those factors include impression, internal satisfaction, prominence, fast-paced life, attraction towards opposite gender, value in society, and self-esteem. Let us discuss these factors in some detail in order to get a better understanding of why young people have a desire to adopt different styles in their lives. 1. Impression The most influencing factor which causes young people adopt distinctive styles is impression. Young people want to make impression on their age fellows. They want to inspire them by their looks and dressing. Dressing is one of the top most things that inspire other people. If a person wears attractive dress which is not usually wore by other people, it is known as style. Some people adopt a dressing style, which is in fashion in order to remain up to date with the ongoing fashion. We all know that first impression always counts a lot for any person. First impression of a person makes other people perceive the character of the person. That is why young people find it very important to give some stylish and impressive looks to other people through proper and up to date dressing. Benton (2008) asserts, “The way that you look and dress is the first impression that people have of you”. Some people think that it is necessary to impress other people in order to survive in the society. Therefore, they adopt latest fashions in order to look better and stylish. Another reason why young people are more interested in adopting new and distinctive fashions is their nature. It is in the nature of young people that they want to look more stylish as compared to their age fellows. So in order to gain an appearance edge over their age fellows, they adopt latest and trendy fashions that are praised by other people. 2. Internal Satisfaction Another reason why young people want to adopt distinctive styles is their internal satisfaction. Internal satisfaction occurs when someone gets appreciation from the society. Internal satisfaction is one of the most important feelings for any person. Internal satisfaction of a person is directly related to admiration and appreciation given to the person by the society. A person feels satisfied when other people admire his style and the fashion that he adopts. Style is not just limited to the dressing or outlook of a person; rather it is also associated with many other things including behavior and characteristics of a person. Adopting new and latest styles is in the nature of most of the young people. Some people do not have enough financial resources to buy stylish things whereas those people, who are financially stable and have the money to buy latest and stylish things, go for adopting new styles in order to get internal satisfaction. Some people feel low internally even if no one points at their old style. It is because the inner sense makes a person feel what other people may think about his old style even if they do not say a single word directly to that person. So, young people adopt new and latest styles in order to make themselves feel better and praised by the society. 3. Prominence Another reason why latest and distinctive styles are adopted by the young generation is the desire of a person to become a prominent figure in the society. Almost every young person wants to be prominent among the age fellows and family members. For this reason, they adopt distinctive and eye-catching styles. Young people want to be center of attention of any gathering or function in which they participate. They have in their minds that dressing and heir style are the major sources behind popularity of a person. So they make trendy hairstyles and wear stylish clothes in order to become prominent among their age fellows. Young people not only emphasize on their dressings and hairstyles but also they give much importance to their facial expressions and speaking styles in order to make other people feel the essence of style in whatever they do. 4. Fast-Paced Life and Latest Technology Style means using most appropriate method to do something. Today’s life is very fast-paced and no one has enough time to waste. So people make use of stylish and most suitable methods to perform any specific task. Style also refers to the use of stylish and latest technology. We can take an example of a television. Most of the young people like to use LCDs instead of using old style televisions just because of style. They make use of LCDs for two basic purposes. First reason is that LCDs do not harm their eyesight. Secondly, LCDs are much more impressive, attractive, and stylish as compared to televisions. Therefore, young people prefer LCDs to televisions not only to protect their eyes bit also to impress other people who do not have LCDs. 5. Attraction Towards Opposite Gender One of the top most reasons why young people take so much interest in latest styles is attraction towards opposite gender. It is common in the nature of boys and girls that both genders try to impress each other by their styles. Boys try to impress girls with their looks whereas girls try to impress boys by their behaviors and hairstyles. Most of the young people take interest in making friendships with the people belonging to the opposite gender. They think that style is the key towards friendship and this is what motivates them to adopt new and latest styles. Every person wants to look different as compared to others in order to become more attractive for the opposite gender. For this reason, they adopt distinctive styles which not make them feel confident but also make them attractive to other people. 6. Value in Society Another reason for adopting distinctive styles is value, which a person gets from the people with whom that person lives. People usually give importance and value to that person who takes good care of his appearance or who has stylish looks. A stylish person is admired by the whole society whereas a person, who does not care much about his looks and appearance, does not usually get much appreciation or recognition from the society. 7. To get Good Job Another reason is to get good job and promotion. Human resource managers usually prefer bold, talented, and stylish people to fill in the vacancies. People with stylish looks and extreme level of confidence are given more jobs as compared to the people with bore dressing and low level of confidence. Young people adopt latest styles in order to catch attention of the employers. 8. Self-Esteem and Confidence Confidence is another reason behind adoption of latest and distinctive styles. As we know that confidence comes with style, young people adopt distinctive styles in order to maintain their self-esteem and to raise their level of confidence. Confidence plays a major role in the success of any person and if there is no confidence, dreams of success can never be fulfilled. Why do the Styles Change so Rapidly? Styles change due to arrival of new styles. Whenever a new style arrives, people leave behind the older ones and adopt new style in order to keep up with the pace of styles. Styles change when people get bored from the existing styles and start searching for new and latest styles. Styles change rapidly because people cannot stick to any specific style for a long period. Gone are the days when one style used to remain for a whole decade. The main reason behind rapid change in styles is that of technology. Technology assists people in making great and rapid changes in everything that they do. Styles depend on the use of technology up to a great extent. We can take an example of shirt’s designs. The fabric design technology is so much advanced that each day new variety of designs are available in the market which leave behind the previous designs. The young generation likes to adopt latest and distinctive styles in order to keep up to date and to look more stylish than ever. Summing it up, we can say that keeping a good style is integral for the young generation. However, the style should be in some limitations and it should not go against the social and religious values of the society in which a person lives.
