For the question: Retirement is not what it used to be. Gone are the days of mandatory retirement. What are some of the reasons individuals who are sixty-five years or older are still part of the workforce, both from a psychological and a social perspective? Identify ways in which older adults are looking for other career options than simply retiring.
According to Santrock (2011), the financial health of older adults is not the main reason behind the engagement of individuals sixty-five years or older in workplaces. Most individuals are financially prepared to face their late adulthood lives with adequate savings or investments to maintain their lifestyles. Although poor financial health is attributable to delayed retirement among older adults, there are other reasons why older adults choose to continue work, change jobs, work part-time, or volunteer their time. The increase in postretirement is associated with older adults' distaste for retirement, psychological dedication to work as well as good health. In addition, educational attainment is positively correlated with postretirement. Men married to working spouses are likely to work in late adulthood. Adjust made to the federal law to permit people above the age of sixty-five to continue working contributes to postretirement. On the other hand, older adults participate in voluntary activities or are volunteers because these options give them opportunities for social interaction, productive activity, as well as positive identity. Furthermore, older adults with adequate income, extended social networks, and who are healthy, and educated, as well as adjust best in postretirement opportunities (Santrock, 2011).
