Mental Illness and RecoveryDiagnostic LabelsDiagnostic labels would hinder treatment. This is illustrated as, when we give some people the permission to behave in a certain way they would wish to behave in based on certain labels we give them, they begin to behave in that manner up to a point when that particular behavior will become part and parcel of their lives. For instance, if a father likes a daughter and calls her a princess and provides her with everything she wants, the daughter would grow up knowing only the princess treatment.

It means, the daughter would end up not settling only with one man in marriage in case that man would not be able to treat her like a princess as her father used to treat her. People with mental disorder can overcome the potential of consequences of being labeled mentally ill or sick. This follows the fact that, by labeling these people, they get to be considered as mentally ill hence they use that as a scape goat to overcome potential harms. It is just advisable for those diagnosed with mental illness top keep their diagnosis private in order not to increase the prevalence of attracting other disease conditions to their health.

When the diagnosis is made public, these people would suffer from depression, stigmatization and a sense of isolation which will even worsen their health conditions. Once one realizes that an acquaintance has been diagnosed with psychological disorder, it is true that their perception towards them will automatically change so that they begin treating them just like they would treat non-acquaintances who are also diagnosed with a similar disorder. However, these people need friendliness and better care and love than before.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) has symptoms such as mood swings and periods of intense depressed mood, uncontrollable anger, suicidal threats, unstable and intense personal relationships and such like[NAM13]. To diagnose this disorder, one would have to look for such behaviors and others such as too much boredom and a sense of emptiness, making efforts to avoid abandonment, uncertainty about self-image. If I were diagnosed with this disorder, it would be hard for me, but I would insist on being under a close watch and be made busy so that I do not think suicidal.

The treatment for the disorder include, psychotherapy strategies such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBP), one should be put on medication in order to reduce the intensity of the symptoms, and one really requires support from a group, friends and family members. ReferenceNAM13: , (NAMI, 2013),
