Inequity for Women in America Introduction The American society is changing and the social responsibilities changing aswell. The changes involve gender roles from the traditional and social structure to the modern day roles. The change of roles seems to have less effect on the way people consider the female gender. Women and men will never achieve equal legal, domestic, educational and employment status society and the female immediate environment only accommodate them as component of law of nature. The essay will focus on Laura Bates article “the year in sexism”, David Brooks “the return of the Pig” and Jones Mother “the rise of the Brogramer” which will indicate the existing inequalities and Monica Potts’ “why aren’t you marred yet” will indicate the closing gaps between societies. The sources will lay basis of the discussion and will be the major factors that will determine the conclusion. Sexism in modern days The modern day world still experiences the male chauvinism effect and feminism as a way of gaining supremacy among the genders. Brooks (2003, 22) indicates the existence of male chauvinism in the modern days. He indicates the nature in which the male population refers to the female genders. The use of provocative words to refer to the female gender is way of the male population to show supremacy among the male population. The female population has seen themselves being referred to by suggestive words and phrases as a way of entertainment. The statements are provocative if used on the male population. An individual needs to be referred to by their names or titles in society. The general terms used to refer to the female population is evident on how the male population enjoys the social supremacy as they seek to intimidate the female population by using terms that diminishes their self-esteem. The nature of sexism among the American population is more than the normal conversation with people in authority and those in the entertainment world being also contributors towards the sexism claims. The major contributors to the sexism situation are media personalities. Their celebrity status then become a contributing factor towards the wide spread sexism among the male population. Bates (2013, 18) indicate the nature in which both sports presenters and radio presenters use terms that suggest the female gender as having a lower class than their male counterparts. In on e of the statements sports journalists use the term female assistant referee to indicate the wrong decisions made by the assistant referee. Efforts t include females in job opportunities is evident. Despite the female representation in the male dominated field it is evident on how the male population treat the opposite gender as they consider their stay in the male dominated field is a way of a flux and efforts needs to be done to eliminate them from the field. The elimination of the female population is done mostly by a way of intimidation. The gender equality notion is only visible by the number but the terms used by the majority of the population to refer to these female professional stills pose questions on how the gender parity. The representation of female in the field is more of formalities rather that societal expectation. The job distribution Female tend to ignore other occupations that the economy provides. Female consider most of the available jobs to be more complex and technical and consider them masculine in nature. The failure by the female gender to take up the challenges has seen a lower representation of the female gender in some job specialties. The coding and programming sector has seen a representation of 20 percent (Jones, 2012 P.8). The trend has seen a down wards trend over the two years. The trend in the number of the gender representatives in the field is attributed to the female perception of the jobs. They tend to pick jobs that are easy in nature. The nature of these jobs has a lower effect to the competitive nature of the female population. The male hence tend to dominate the field s enjoying the inferiority complex the female population has subjected themselves to. While comparing the levels of incomes the complex filed and the preferred female field, it is evident that the male enjoy higher incomes. The lower incomes by the females as a result of their choice in professionals create a gap between the two genders. The social gap that the two genders create eventually affects their moral and economic presence in society. The trend is no different from those experienced in the pre industrialization era where the males where considered more economically beneficial than the female population. Efforts are there to ensure the females take up challenges equal to those taken by the male population. The stigmas that surround the female gender have seen the effort laying less effort as far as the jobs is concerned. The presence of the female empowerment programs such as center for women and information technology is an indicator of low female representation in matters the technology and other technical courses. The failure by the gender to use the existing empowerment programs has been an indicator of the gaps that exist between the male and female population in some fields. Jones (2012. 8) also indicates the recruitment problems posed by the market to be the contributor towards the gender inequality. The employment market tends to favor the male gender more than the female population. The trend is brought about by the way the female market themselves. The male tend to possess a more advanced approach to the market. In matters technology the majority tends to have a higher probability to get jobs given the numbers. The recruitment rules tend to ignore the equal gender representation rule hence favoring the male population based on the skills and number. The flexibility of a male worker also is a contributor of the high levels of employment. The females tend to be less flexible due t their personal commitments and their social role. They tend to choose opportunities that do not affect their normal lives while the male choose opportunity based on their skills and levels of wages. The two different perceptive tend to see more males in the production industry as compared to the females. The competitive nature are not structural but are influenced by individual perception of the labor market. The absence of the females to offer challenges to the male population has seen most of the advantages falling to the male population. The nature of male dominate in the sectors is more of the law of nature which states the survival for the fittest and male use their masculine nature to acquire opportunities in the market. The females on the other hand fails to offer the much needed competition by taking a back seat in technology and allowing the males to dominate the market. The social role of female The social responsibility of the female population has had an effect in their political and other organizational role in society. The female population is has the duty to ensure the family stays as a unit. The domestic responsibility eventually affects their decision making. The effect is also felt on the political scene and other democratic process with most of the females choosing to choose their social responsibilities over their democratic rights and their representation in the elective position. The few females present in the political set up are usually overpowered by the males. Reforms to empower the females only interest a few and depending on the cultural background of the females they would tend to choose the traditional composition of the society. The females tend to accept their positions and are the reasons behind the widening gap between the two genders. The religious composition and the cultural perception undermine the equal representation of the females in the political scene and the social composition of the community. The society itself has been seen as to fight back the presents of females and their effect of attaining equal representation being dampened by these moves by society. The male dominancy is advanced while the effort by the females to provide challenges in fields dominated by men being undermined by the nature of society. The females have been forced to take up fewer opportunities that society has provided. The available opportunities only provide competition to the same sex while proving weak to the male gender. The high number of female domestic working either immigrants or local is what society and female position in it has subjected the same population to. Society considers the female society to be slow in learning with more time needed for them to grasp concepts. The nature created a negative belief that both exit among the female population and the male population. The result of such notions is an increase in the levels of females taking up positions while female population takes fewer and the blame being laid upon to society which considered the female population less powerful and hence providing limited opportunities to them in both the political and leadership fields. Female empowerment The notion of the market and society dominated has been disproved by others. There exist a number of efforts to empower the female population. The efforts stretch from the family levels to the government level. The family empowerment of females has seen the male child being neglected (Potts, 2011 P6). The neglected male then eventually reduces his competitive age to the market and both in terms of labor and political position. The redaction in these traits has had an advantage toward the female population as they tend to bridge the existing gap between the two genders. Bridging of the gaps hence ensures an equal representation by both genders. The empowerment of the female by family means an improved effort different from the traditional responsibilities subjected by the females by the society through culture and religion. The empowerment of females is more than the family setup with the government and the few empowered females taking the responsibility to encourage more females to take up technical course and careers and at the same time trying to break the existing stereotypes that hinder the level of development and production nature of the gender. These barriers have eventually opened the female mind towards the realization of their duties in society and the nature in which they can improve the situation of their immediate society. The empowered females then have a responsibility to represent her in the complex nature of society and hence the male chauvinism experienced in the modern society being eliminated by nature itself. Conclusion The society provides different genders and should also provide equal opportunities to them. The impact of the inequity in modern day America is attributed to the cultural composition and failures by the female population to take up challenges with challenges range from political, leadership and employment opportunities. The females tend to choose less competitive opportunities living the remaining population to be dominated by the male population. They drive themselves out of the competitive market as a means of ensuring they survive and avoid the male dominated market and efforts to empower females are undermined by the same gender as it fails to utilize these opportunities to enable them dominate the market and offer a competitive edge to the male population hence the males use the weakness the female population creates for themselves to intimidate them and drive them out of the market. The current age is no different from the ancient period where the female where subjective to the males, the females still have lesser opportunities as compared to the males also the males dominate the market as they perceive to stronger, and more effective in society. They intimidate the male population and hence creating a dominancy level that would take years to find a balance between the two populations this is oblivious of the fact that there exist high levels of democracy and modern leadership mechanism in USA.
