Introducing social science DD101 TMA3 The table illustrates on the ethni of the population in England and Wales in 2001 and 2011. It also illustrates the quantitative figures of the ethnic population of England and Wales in 2011. It is important to note that a number of ethnic groups was involved in the census. The table shows an increase in all the subgroups living in England and Wales. An insignificant sub-group dropped, for example, Irish subgroup from the White group dropped from 1.2% in 2001 to 2011. A group with the highest number of sub-groups in England and Wales was the Asian also known as Asian British. In most of the subgroups, there was a 0.3% increase in their population as compared to what was collected ten years earlier. The whites were divided into three subgroups. In 2001, there were 1.2% of Irish but dropped to 0.9% ten years later. The second subgroup is Gypsy also known as Irish traveler. This subgroup was not there when the census was being carried out in 2001, but in 2011, 0.1% were counted during the census. The third subgroup of white was small named under other subgroup constituted up to 2.6% of the total population conducted in 2001. Later in 2011, their population increased to 4.4% of the total population of England and Wales. A sub-group with the highest percentage increase was the other white which increased by 1.8%. In 2001, their population was 2.4% and increased to 4.4% in 2011. In addition, this sub-group was the highest population realized during the census. In 2001, Gypsy also known as Irish traveler were not present in England and Wales because they were 0%, Arab was also 0%. Therefore, it is clear that they were recorded into the data table in 2011 when their numbers were realized. Caribbean sub-group within the Back British did not change in the two censuses that were conducted. In table two, majority of the whites are in Wales comprising of 95.6% of the total population as per the census of 2011. The least population size of white in the English speaking regions and Wales was London constituting 59.8% of the total population. In the multiple ethnic groups, London had the highest population of 5%. The North East of English region and Wales had the least number of multiple ethnic groups in 2011. In the English regions and Wales, Asian British was more in London with a population of 18% of the total population. On the other hand, South West had the least number of Asian British. Black British were very few; the highest number is seen in London with a population of 13.3% of the total population of those living in London. North East had the least number of Black British. Finally, other ethnic groups that were not named existed in small numbers. Majority of the other ethnic groups were in London with a population of 3.4% South West had the least number. Despite the fact that London had the least figures of white group, its general population was evenly distributed to all the groups unlike Wales, which had the highest number of white but insignificant number of other ethnic groups. It is also a fact that white is the most significant population in the English regions and Wales as per the population conducted in 2011. Task 2 In the essay published by Laura Smith, there are facts to prove that identities of a place can be a tool of inclusion and exclusion. Trevor Philips, a Racial Equality chairperson asserts that there is a passive apartheid in the countryside. In his reference, Trevor Philips focuses his argument on Brockenhurst village has a high population of minority groups. In spite of the fact that this village is few kilometers from the capital, the white have excluded this village with the view of racism. He further demonstrated that being in this village was like being in another world. He told the BBC that one could have walked the entire city without spotting a single either an Asian or a black. This shows how identities can lead to exclusion. Additionally, the blacks are associated with dirty jobs such as rubbish collectors. This kind of stereotyping is also exclusion of blacks in England and Wales. In travel, systems in the south west region of English speaking regions of England and Wales are associated with purely whites (Sayer 145). In his assumption, Trevor Philips illustrates how people who are non-white are uncomfortable being with the white due to exclusion. It is not that the whites exclude the non-white intentionally, but because of the fact that the insignificant number of non-white have raised concerns. The few numbers of blacks and Asian is creating drift with the rest of the population in the region. Identifying a black person in the streets of the city was like play in the movie a statement disagreed by people from the Brockenhurst village (Sills and Robert 155). According to Julia Timms, Blacks and Asian are hardly seen in the city, and if one sees, they are easily noticeable. Although they are treated equally, the fact remains that they will still stand out. Jean-marc Charton asserts that she has been operating a French teashop for nearly ten years yet she has not seen a colored person. She adds that, even she ever saw a colored person then it will be a big surprised. She associates the non-white people with cleaning or nursing with Asians and blacks (Ross 89). Data collected indicates that colored people were not welcomed. Little can be seen because minority communities because they are perceived to be closed. This was observes by Boldrini opticians in the village. According to the author, her husband who was an Italian was discriminated by his friends and was not allowed to carry out some duties due to the fact that he was seen not to fit into that particular group. On the other hand, taxes placed everyone in an equal platform. The payment of tax included Blacks and Asians and were granted freedom to exercise their will. On the contrary, people in this region are perceived only on color. Majority of the population in the region have excluded their counterparts in spite them paying the necessary taxes (O'Leary 67). According to Chris Dunkinson a 23 year old American faces difficulties from the white as he say that the piss him. The old are understanding and are open-minded. Therefore, age identities create exclusion in the society. Victimization is the order of the day in a mixed society. Chris stated that there was a night when a cell phone was stolen, without any proper investigations; he was victimized just because he was from a different racial group. It is because he was an Asian that he was spared. He thought that if he was a black then the consequences would have been severe. Trevor Philips encouraged minority groups to move out of the cities to villages such as Brockenhurst, which has 98.6% of white so as to eliminate racial discrimination and exclusion. The minority groups are not evenly spread across the region. This is evidenced through a research that was conducted. The findings showed that for every 85 people in south-west, there is only one person. Nationwide analysis in the region indicates that one in every twelve people come from a minority group (Gerring121). Research findings have illustrated that discomforts that blacks and Asians face either ling or visiting their relatives in the region is more than just fear of hostility. There is a serious case of exclusion in lifestyle products and services. Taking a case of haircut and cosmetics, their accessibility to the blacks are Asians are quite difficult. In the business sector, little or no blacks and Asians are evidenced in advertising services because they portray a negative image. Stereotyping has completely changed in the way things are carried out in the region. Researchers have been done in order to identify the effects caused by identity exclusion. According to Jacqui Stearn, most of the sectors have featured middle class white to portray political fitness, in his statement; the whites should consider inviting other people into the sectors. However, there are people from the minority groups who say that their counterparts despite color difference welcomed them. They added that they have been included in the businesses that are being undertaken in the villages. For instance, Pauline Soma form South Africa has been teaching for a long time, yet she never experienced any exclusion from the white when she was a teacher. She believes that researchers’ insights people basing on color (Goertz 326). During her time as a teacher, she experienced exclusion from pupils when she was teaching. In her home village, Brockenhurst has little of exclusion we she claimed to be enjoying. She says that it is only in cities and main towns that she faces rough times. In conclusion, those who have felt exclusion has admired to go back to their home country instead of facing continuous problem of exclusion in the region.
