Topic: How can we use criminal justice to deter murder/crime? This idea about criminal justice being used as deterrence to murder came to mind due to the increasing lawlessness in the US highlighted by the recent shooting in Connecticut that left 26 people dead, 20 of whom were children. Just last year, the same incident of public shooting also happened in a movie theater leaving many people dead. Given the rampancy and sheer coldness of the murders, it seems that murderers are not deterred by our criminal justice system.

The need to revisit of our criminal justice as a deterrence to murder came to mind because US has one of the highest murder/crime rates in the world and perhaps also has the highest rate of public random shooting. This presents a nagging question about the efficacy of our criminal justice in deterring murder that it may no longer served its purpose of deterring crime that it now needs a restudy to identify which aspect/s needs to be updated make it effective in deterring murder.
