Media, music, peer pressure and religion are some of the important factors examined, in order to determine what influences attitudes to fashion and explains the changes in fashion over time.At a recent fashion event, London designer Hussein Chalayan used animatronic dresses to literally reveal the changes that had occurred on the fashion scene from the Victorian era to the present. (Annonymous 2007). The models at the fashion show appeared clad first in Victorian style dresses, which rapidly disappeared to transform into more modern styles, thereby revealing the evolution and change in fashion over the decades.

This feat was accomplished through the use of technology, by using batteries located in each dress that was connected to a microprocessor.The changes in fashion may be a reflection of changing attitudes towards fashion. Over time, the idea of what constitutes fashion and innovation in style and dress has evolved such that more radical measures have been prevailing. One example is the use of tattoos and piercings which have become a fashion symbol today where they would have been taboo in past decades.

Modern attitudes towards fashion may also be conditioned by media images, especially among young people.This project aims to assess the changing attitudes towards fashion in today’s society. The major focus of this study is the younger population among the student body. This study will examine their attitudes towards fashion by examining how important it is in their lives and what are the factors governing the choices that they make.As pointed out by Dwight E Robinson (1961:376), fashion is most often equated to the changes in the design of things mainly for decorative purposes.

As he further points out, the fashion industry is dominated by considerations of appearances rather than actual serviceability or economic value, so that attitudes to fashion are largely governed by the perceptions of the public about the appearance of the garments and the degree of prestige associated with its use.
