The Novels of the Post-War Period - Book Report/Review Example

The female protagonists of these novels were distinct and unique in their strong quest for survival, freedom, and identity in a bid to combat and confront the negative stereotyping widely associated with the people of their race as well as gender. The case of Ana Castillo's So Far From God and Sandra Cisneros's Woman Hollering Creek are cases in point. An analysis of the two novels - Sandra Cisneros "Woman Hollering Creek" and Ana cautions "So far from God" reveals the grave reality of the Chicanas not only in present times but also during the prior decades which is ridden with oppression, discrimination, and defined gender roles within a highly Anglo-ruled macro-society.

Women, in general, have been subject to severe oppression and segregation in a highly patriarchal society but the plight of the Chicanas, as observed through the main characters depicted in the two novels, help in further understanding the colonization of women and their fight for constant survival, provoking a need to analyze, observe, and discuss the issue at length from a feminist perspective. The significant poem by Ana Montes reflects the history during the unsettled years of the 1960s and throughout the 1970s when a generation of Chicana feminists protested against unequal gender roles and conflicts within the Chicano social movement.

Though the demonstration challenged chiefly against the assigned patterns of “societal inequality” in the United States, it “ignited a political debate between Chicanas and Chicanos based on the internal gender contradictions prevalent within El Movimiento” (García 1).
