A review of the literature available regarding adolescents with substance abuse problems further enhanced my desire to work towards such adolescents who often wind up in the juvenile justice system (Payne 65). I chose to work in the field of social work after witnessing a neighbor’s adolescent child’s struggle with substance abuse, criminal conduct and ultimately overdose on illicit drugs.
