 New Shopping center in Miami The main aim of this paper is to identify and to prove the importance of an issue of local concern. I needed to find something really important, something which may really influence the lives of all the students, teachers and other staff-members and have an impact on the University in general. So, the issue which I’ve chosen as the most interesting and important is the following – I guess that we need a big shopping mall in Oxford. There are a lot of young people in university and as you know, young girls always love to go shopping, but there isn’t any big shopping mall in here and this is quite inconvenient for the students, especially for the girls. The Miami University, which is situated in Oxford, state Ohio is a very famous university in the USA. We should mention that there are more than twenty thousand students and near two thousands administration staff members in this University (Miami University website). So I consider that the problem of having at least middle-size mall here is quite important. Some people consider that students do not need a shopping center within the territory of the University, because shopping and other kinds of recreation will distract the students from their basic occupation – their study. But I still consider that students need rest sometimes and of course they need to buy some things like clothes, food and many other which we need not for fun, but for living. In our university there are a lot of different clubs, sections and other facilities for recreation and sport, so we could go in for sport and have a rest and get involved in different kinds of educational-recreational action, but when we raise the issue of going somewhere for a shopping we should admit that within the University walls we have not so many opportunities. At the same time the University offers great educational opportunities, which often presupposes staying inside the establishment for a continuous period of time. For instance the University provides unlimited access to studying materials: “This peer-reviewed journal is published at Miami by and for faculty at universities and colleges to increase student learning through effective teaching, interest in and enthusiasm for the profession of teaching, and communication among faculty about their classroom experiences”. (Miami University Website). That means that students are provided with opportunity to obtain food for their brains and nothing for their bodies. If students need to buy something they need to spend near one hour or even more to get to the Kenwood (the nearest shopping mall in the area) or to use their computers to buy the things they need in the online format. For me both of these ways are not the best ones and moreover it appears to take a lot of time which could serve in favour of our study. Also I should mention that according to the statistics there are more girls than boys in the Miami University, so the shopping mall would be a great thing for the female students and University staff-members. Another reasonable fact for creating a trade area on the territory of the educational establishment is the unity and solidity of all the students and teaching stuff – the University represents a separate community, whereas leaving it is similar to leaving your native country for a while. The University proclaims that the student life is organized so that their spare time has close connection to Miami University spirit: “Miami University Oxford is a residential campus, with nearly all first- and second-year students living in 35 residence halls. These halls represent various Living Learning Communities (LLCs), which provide an opportunity for students to live and learn with others who share their interests.” (Miami University Website).Taking this information into consideration one may assume that leaving the territory of campus just for shopping is not reasonable and may serve as a distractive element which may negatively influence on an educational process. To my mind it is not a very big problem to build a shopping center, but it is still not very easy to do it. To prove my point I want to say that, for example, the total area of our University is near 2,000 acres and the middle-size mall may occupy not a very big territory so I think that the place for a shopping mall could be found within this huge University territory. I realize that to build such a huge building will take time and, of course, a lot of money, but I’m sure that we could involve the outside investors to be sponsors. In this case all the sides will win; the students will get an opportunity to save time and money and to go shopping without leaving the territory of the University; the investors will get a lot of customers and therefore – bigger income and good advertisement; the University will also be in the winners position because it is confirmed even by psychologists that happy student is a better student. Also some people may think that Oxford is not very big, so here is no enough space to build a shopping mall and one more problem the traffic is not very well in Oxford, so if we build a shopping mall, we need to improve a lot of infrastructure construction, so that the government need to spend a lot of money. Here we can connect our issue with Road-building program of the city government (The City of Oxford website). So this project is aimed to make the lives of the students and the whole city much better. And this will serve as a valuable contribution to the global development of the state and the country. If we look into the future prospects of this project we may see the following image: the University will become like a small town within our city. The improved roads and better traffic will make our University town much easier to reach so more and more people will be able to visit it a see how great it is and then enter this University or send their children here. Also the shopping center may become a great opportunity for those who study economics here its (the mall’s) work may be used to study its work and the circulation of money and also it will serve as the visual evidence of the enterprise to be studied. Also this shopping center will give a lot of working places for the students of our university so it would be a great experience for those who want to start a real adult life and also for those who lack money and need to work for living without spending much time to get to work. And one more thing the University will get some payments from the mall owners for the land rent and this is will be a great way to get money for the improvement of the University. I made a little investigation to prove my point of view to the issue under discussion. I know that the final decision will be made by the government, but the student’s opinion is not less important in this case. So, I asked my University friends whether the shopping center is needed here or not and eighty five percent of the interviewees told me ‘yes’ and only ten percent said ‘no’. So we can conclude that most students want the shopping center to be built within the territory of the University. In conclusion I should say that the issue under discussion is very important to many students of our University and is able to become a great progress in the life of the whole organization. This shopping center may serve not only as a pace for recreation but also it will be a source of working places for many students who are short of money. There are a lot of different viewpoints concerning this debatable issue, but I am sure that my paper is able to somehow influence the decision of the University and the city government concerning the building of the new shopping center within the University’s area. Taking into consideration all the above mentioned facts one may conclude that even such an eminent establishment as Miami University still has things to be improved.
