Interpreting Research Questions Using ANOVAThe first journal article is a study that aimed to explore women’s experiences of domestic violence in Myanmar. The study specifically set out to examine the relationship between antecedents and the outcomes of women’s experiences together with influences of attribution styles, response styles and different forms of domestic violence on their experiences. In this study there are a number of independent variables and these are in four groups or scales: never, rarely, occasionally and often.

The dependent variables are fourteen and these include: feminine attitudes, minor physical assault, severe physical assault, minor psychological aggression, severe psychological aggression, psychological outcome, physical outcome, work outcome, social intervention, non-intervention, self-blame and situational blame (Kyu & Kanai, 2005). The level of measurement of a variable determines what kinds of tools are appropriate in describing the variables. There are five levels of measurements of variables and these include: nominal, ordinal, interval, dichotomous and ratio.

The last two are often treated as either nominal or interval respectively (Healey, 2011). In this study, the variables were measured using the nominal and the ordinal categories. A number of methods of statistical data analysis are used and these include: factor analysis, correlations analyses, ANOVA and multiple regression analyses. A total of four independent variables and fourteen independent variables were measured. (Kyu & Kanai, 2005)The research question for the study was “Is domestic violence more likely to happen to women who have been fooled into marriage without truly knowing the partner?

The research established that 69% and 27% percent of women were reported experiencing psychological aggression and physical assault respectively. The results also showed that women who have been fooled into marriage without their knowledge experience minor physical assault, severe physical assault and minor psychological aggression. The findings, the researchers say can be used in creating programs that can be used to address the problem effectively in the city (Kyu & Kanai, 2005).The second journal article aimed to study how children are involved in adult domestic violence.

The study thus aimed to examine a large number of factors in the family and the surrounding that may be able to explain the differences that are witnessed in children in terms of their responses to adult domestic violence. This study used demographic variables as the independent variables and these included: woman’s job status, income, transitional housing, education, relationship with the abuser, experiences of both physical and emotional abuse and effects on the children. The dependent variables in this study involved a scale that was titled “children intervened” and was grouped into four categories.

The level of measurement of the independent variables was recorded as dichotomous variables and the dependent variables were recorded as ordinal. A total number of ten independent variables and four dependent variables were analyzed in the study (Edleson, Mbilinyi, Beeman, & Hagemeister, 2003).The study had two research questions and these include: “(1) How did children intervene in these violent events; and (2) which family and contextual characteristics statistically predicted the types and degree of children’s intervention in these events.

” The study results indicated that slightly less than one quarter of the mothers surveyed reported that their children called for help during the abuse, one quarter that the children were directly involve in the violence that was directed towards her. The study also established that the more the mother was being abuse; the more the children intervened in the abuse. The study thus recommends effective programs that can ensure the safety of the children and that of their mothers (Edleson, Mbilinyi, Beeman, & Hagemeister, 2003).

The observation that can be made from the above journal articles is that all of them have used many variables in their analysis. Each side both on the independent and the dependent variables has a number of variables but the independent variables seem to be more than the dependent variables. The methods of analysis used in the articles include ANOVA which is appropriate for such studies. This is because it is simple to use and its design and layout is good for statistical analysis. Another advantage is that ANOVA requires very few measures to establish significant differences in the variables being measured (Burke, 2012).
