TelecomIntroductionIn the past decade, there has been emergence of tremendous growth of the mobile communication industry. Intense competition and constant changes in the business world has forced many companies change their mode of operations. However, the main concern in the telecommunication industry is research and development (R&D) which posses a greater cost to many organizations (Lucky 23). Nevertheless, smaller organizations find it difficult to R&D in order to diversify their business.

Nonetheless, this should not deter them from making good use of telecommunication in their operationsRationaleIn any given organization, whether big or small, growth is dynamic when principles of strategic management is applied (Lucky 24). In this regard, small organizations should focus on enhancing their management and apply principles of objective attainment in order to survive the highly competitive business environment. New business designs and early-stage innovation experiments should be fostered at all times (Lucky 25).

To achieve this, small organizations need to develop their R&D activities using all available means within their capacity. It is important for these organizations to analyze their business concept and direct their attention on improving the already existing technologies (Timo and Antti 105). However, this should be in line with the operative objectives in order to minimize cost incurred in R&D. These companies should use project portfolio management to make sure they progress effectively (Timo and Antti 105).

In fact, in telecommunication technology, an overflow of potential ideas and technologies is more challenging that lack of ideas, meaning that a success factors in creating competitive advantage lies on the hands of the organization in deciding which the right idea to employ (Timo and Antti 106). One of the best ways through which small organizations can foster abreast of telecom is to asses the available resources which would be employed on R&D. therefore, this means that the companies should abandon projects that bring less value to the company or consume fewer resources without future promise.

Another major issue of concern is capacity management which should be well incorporated with project portfolio. In essence, capacity management forms the platform on which small organizations can withstand highly competitive business environment. Investing in professional staff would be a great step in facilitating growth (Timo and Antti 106). Competent employees with diversified telecommunication knowledge would actually bring about growth in R&D to the organization. Therefore, it is very important for these organizations to subject their employees to professional growth through training and education advancement.

On the other hand, research and development refers to the process of developing new forms from old products through technological innovation (Lucky 26). In this regard, basic research, which is less expensive than applied research can be utilized to develop the current technology. In fact, since big and public organizations tends to mostly concentrate on applied research, private and small organizations may benefit from their basic research when big organizations borrow them the basic research in order to develop and apply it in applied research (Lucky 28).

ConclusionAlthough small organizations may lack financial capacity to carryout R&D, they can still thrive through use of capacity management and project management portfolio.
