Description Of The Photo Some photographs bring back such memories to mind that make us gloomy for some moments. When we look at such pictures, we go into a flash-back and experience the same pain and sadness that we were going through at the time the picture was taken. Still, we keep such photographs and secure them in albums and photo frames no matter how much they discomfort us whenever we look at them. I have never understood this context of human nature. Why should a man save such items in possession that inflict pain on his heart? Why is it a part of human nature to enjoy suffering? I do not know if I am right, but all I know is that there are some pictures in my possession that make me sad. The picture I am going to describe here is one such picture. I have taken out this picture from the New Year album of 2011. It is a family picture and contains the images of my mom, my stepfather, my elder sister and me. It was taken in Paris on the evening of New Year. I specifically chose this photo to describe because it contained my stepfather about whom I want to write some lines here. You can see in the picture that all of us are posing to be happy. You will not see true happiness on anyone’s face. This is true that we were sad that day. I also remember that my sister was unhappy because our stepfather had not bought her a new Dolce and Gabbana bag earlier that day. She wanted that too much. But she hated him otherwise too although she would all the time ask him for expensive things and clothes. I never demanded anything like expensive Gucci clothes or Swiss watches from him and kept myself happy with my own things. My sister had never wanted mom to marry him. He was actually a very manipulative man yet generous enough to buy us things whenever he wanted us to listen to him and do what he liked. He would also fight with my mother occasionally. You can see in the picture that my mom is sitting too far away from my stepfather. This was because they had a severe fight just before the dinner. Still, mom was pretending as if she was very happy. You can see the false smile on her face in the picture. The situation was so very perplexing for me that I could not give a true expression in the picture and, you can see, how confused and sad I was looking. I was sad because my mom and sister were sad. I was still trying to smile a bit but was really unable to hide the gloom that was bottling up inside me. That was the day I realized how much I missed my real father. I wished he was there with us that evening instead of my stepfather. The gloom that you can see in the picture has a whole background and we never knew what hurricane waited for us in the days to come. When I was six years old, my mother got divorced from my real father. I was too young to know the reason behind their separation and did not have even a glimpse of what was going on. I did not know what separation meant. My sister understood all of it but she pretended to be happy. So, I could not tell it from her expressions how affected she was. I was, however, very upset when I came to realize after one year that my father was not going to live with us ever again. That realization was heart-wrenching for me. Whenever I met my father after that, I felt that he was really sad and depressed all the time. I remember how he would take me to church on Sundays and pray about our reunion. I was too small to do anything about it. All I wanted to do was to make my parents happy. After a few years, I got used to the idea of living away from my father and visiting him from time to time. When I was eleven years old, my mother finally met someone in Italy when she was out for a fashion show. She never told me or my elder sister about him until the affair got serious. One day, she told me that she wanted me to meet him. I could sense something fishy was going on between the two of them; still, I made myself think that he was only a friend of hers. It was my sister who really complicated the things for my mom because she did not like the new guy. But, she soon adjusted herself with the situation when the man took us for shopping. Even though my sister cooled down a bit but I knew that deep down she did not really like the guy. She did not want him to be a permanent part of our family. I remember my sister would repeatedly say, “He’s fake, I don’t need a new dad.” Since I did not want to complicate the matter, I compromised with the situation. After a few years, when I was 18 years old, I sensed that things were changing between my mom and her husband. My mom would stay depressed all the time. Her husband was changing. He was not the same person anymore. He started hurting my mom physically. I knew this because I could see bruises on my mom’s arms. It was time for me to take a stand. One night, after drinking some beer and smoking a pack of cigarette, I went to my step father, pushed him, and insulted him. My feeling was so intense that I wanted to kill him there and then. The fuss became so big that we had to go to court. Finally, my mother divorced him. She is now married to a kind gentleman who, I believe, will never hurt her. In the end, I would like to say that my mother got her share of happiness after all the hardships she had been seeing in her previous marriages. The picture took me back to my past and I could not hold myself from writing down my memories, no matter how much I hate to recall them. These memories can never fade away from my mind. My sister also wants to forget these memories, but the irony is that…she also has a copy of this photograph in her album. Alas! Read More
