The play incorporates several themes and ideas which he had discussed in his previous texts. The play utilizes the play format which allows the author to dramatize his ideas in a forceful manner. This makes the play so intense. In the play, the author has mainly focused on suffering of being. Vladimir and Estragon are patiently waiting for something that can alleviate their boredom. Thus, Godot can simply imply the various aspects and things that several people await. In the play, Vladimir and Estragon are the tramps who wait for the landowner called Godot.

They are optimistic that their lives will automatically change. Thus, they plan to pass some of their time dreaming and arguing. While resting, they are interrupted by Lucky and Pozzo who have an unpleasant and inextricable relationship. The tramps continue waiting after a young man declares the coming of Godot. After the World War, it was impossible for any literary artist to challenge the norms in writing. However, Becket is recognized for his challenge to the expectation of theatre. The play presents a virtually nonexistence set, a purposeless action and an illogical plot.

More so, the play has repetitive language that contradicts the real actions. Estragon complains about the static nature of the play as he says, “nobody goes, nothing happens and nobody comes” (Becket 41). This is not the nature of the play as it has several conflicts, mishaps, mere verbal exercises and numerous comic routine. The play has a bawdy humorous character which streams from the word play, the farcical stage actions and the defeated expectancy. In addition, the play depicts some seriousness in the manner it depicts its philosophical monologues and symbolism.

The characters in the play exchange roles and hats with ease. The action of this play is realized in the survival techniques. For instance, humanity survives in this empty existence which the author sees as life. Estragon and Vladimir share experience and Estragon tell Vladimir, “We always find out something to give us the impression that we exist” (Becket 69). In the play, Vladimir and Estragon are a representative of humankind. They try all means to make ends meet. They are aligned on the double edges between hope and despair.

They have numerous differences though they complement each other. As the scenes shifts, Pozzo is highlighted as a rich man who later reappears in reduced circumstances. First, he has lost sight and his self certainty has been withdrawn. He is an example of people with forced optimism, who blind themselves to permanency in the world and the illusory nature of power. Furthermore, Lucky is struck dumb. This represents their emotional ad moral limitation. A possibility in the life of Pozzo is blinded by his debunked faith which suggests that life without Christian principles is actually reduced.

Pozzo and Lucky live unequal life unhappy inequality. Thereby, the play suggests the interminable waiting nature of life. It is also bracketed by death and birth. More so, the word Godot implies that thing that we wait. The intention of this play is in contrary to identity by Godot. The play intends to portray uncertainty of life by defeating the expectation we have on discovering who Godot really is. Thus, the difference between individuals is determined by efforts made after birth and before death.
