Production of a TV Fiction Treatment & Evaluation Azzam The treatment for this television fiction is grounded on the contemporary questions of identity with key focus on religion. Born into a middle class family, Azzam was a Muslim who was born in Pakistan. His mother Haseena nurtured the virtues of peace, love and respect for people to him at a rather tender age. As he continued to grow up, Azzam was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, which was an autism disorder that highly affected his to ability interact with other people. Due to this disorder, his capacity to learn in normal public institutions was also hindered with some of the other students picking fights with him. Haseena later decided to hire a private tutor for her son and this is where the skills and talents of Azzam were developed. Later after college, Azzam made up his mind to move to New York, in search of greener pastures. Here, he was hosted and employed by his uncle who owned a beauty product organization. For Azzam, New York was a place that was filled with wander, much of which was not welcomed. The city was full of several people talking and walking helter skelter and vehicles criss crossing the roads. Screeching of brakes here, chortled horns there and a cluttered atmosphere that befuddled Azzam and made him unable to cross the road. He stood at the middle of the road covering his ears with his eyes tightly closed mumbling inaudible words desperately wanting to make it all stop. Simultaneously, the traffic slowly began to form as the impatient drivers continued to shout at him, while hooting their vehicles. This further triggered his disorder and he began to shake fervently. Luckily, Aadil, a woman who was watching from a salon saw Azzam’s predicament and came to his rescue. She ushered him into the salon and offered him a seat and glass of water. Slowly, Azzam regained composure and thanked the people in the salon for their assistance. As he was heading for the door, Aadil asked him what his name was. Azzam halted his exit and introduced himself. Concomitantly, he began to market the beauty products that his uncle had employed him to sell. The people at the salon were impressed by the level of Azzam’s honesty and integrity. He on the other hand, was blown away by the beauty of Aadil now that he took time look at her during his presentation. Impressively, several people bought his products and more of them placed requests for orders to be delivered to them; and this was how Azzam met his wife Aadil, who had a son. All was well in Azzam’s life, until the contentions of 9/11 occurred. While people mourned for their loved ones, the rest of the country faced an eerie of uncertainty. It was believed that the blast of 9/11 occurred as a result of ‘Jihad’, which was a holy Islam war. Majority of the people who were either Christians or Hindus and people from other religions began avoiding the Muslim population as they had sobriquet them as terrorists. Not only did Aadil’s salon business go down most of the family members also faced acts of prejudices due to their religion. Azzam did not construe why people chose to be vile towards them. This is more so because according to the lessons he was taught by his mother, people were only categorized into two i.e. good people and the bad people. He was disheartened because people across the world and around his community discriminated them on the basis of their religion rather than on the basis of their deeds (Johar, 2010). Levels of hostility aggravated over time and it was worsened when his six year old son faced the same discrimination acts from his best friend. The misunderstanding between these two lads led to a fight where Azzam’s son was beaten because of being a Muslim. Having been left unconscious on the schools playground, Aadil’s son later died in the hospital due to a raptured spleen. This demise takes a toll on Azzam’s wife who is antagonized as she mourns for her son. She kept reminiscing that maybe if he had not agreed to marry a Muslim then his son would probably be alive. Her anger enrages her to push Azzam away telling him to go and tell the president that he is not a terrorist. Although Aadil utters these words out of spite and anger of the loss of her son, Azzam takes her words seriously and commences a journey to the White House. The wretchedness of losing his son was distressing but as he wrote on his journal, the thought of losing his wife was unbearable. He thus pursued the journey with an objective of meeting the president. On several occasions, Azzam missed the presence of the President and as he continued his pilgrimage he began to run out of money. His impeccable skills in repairing most things came in handy as he repaired people’s cars, electronics, etc. in order to earn an income. At one time, Azzam volunteered to help a village that had succumb to the Katrina hurricane. He found the people hiding inside a church and the tried rebuilding the roof and other sheltering materials. Without his awareness, the television media aired the news on the hurricane featuring Azzam as a volunteer who selflessly devoted his time and energy to help the people. This story touched the hearts of several people, some of whom came the following day to also assist the people. Among the people who were touched by the story was his wife, who also came to place where Azzam was. Azzam was overwhelmed by tears both him and the wife embraced and mumbling their apologies and their forgiveness. Aadil tried to convince her husband that they should go home but he declined stating that he was raised to always keep his word. The following day, they both continued the journey to a venue where the president was scheduled to sojourn. He was able to reach to a point that was close enough to see the president. Although the security was heavy, Azzam was determined to give him the message. He began to shout exactly what his wife had told him to tell the president, “Mr. President, my name is Azzam and I am not a terrorist.” This shouting caught the eyes of the people who had cameras and the president made his way, word reached him that Azzam, the man who had volunteered to help people trapped by the Katrina Hurricane was seeking audience with him. Having planned to visit the area himself, the president came back to where the crowd had been standing and asked the security men to let Azzam through. Azzam and his wife went to the president where he introduced himself again saying, “Mr. President, my name is Azzam and I am not a terrorist.” He showed him a picture of his son and stated that he was beaten to death because he was a Muslim and he was also not a terrorist. The crowd was moved. Evaluation The treatment of this television broadcast is aimed to people of all walks of life i.e. men and women, young and old, rich and poor, etc. This treatment is suitable for viewing to all members of a family since the message being conveyed is vital everyone to know understand. It can be aired in the evening particularly at a time when students have returned from school and parents have returned from work. First, it complements the production that originates from the local broadcasting channels. This program should be incorporated in the broadcasting list because it supports and fosters some of the core values and beliefs that is highlighted production made by the local broadcasting channels (RTE, 2010). Secondly, the program also has the capacity of adding onto the diversity of the program line up. While some programs are filled with action, drama, horror, thriller, comedy, etc. this broadcast shall add onto this diversity. It shall also foster the humanitarian virtues of love and respect for people from different religious, social, economic and educational backgrounds. Similarly, this program should be broadcasted because it supports the skills and talents of independent film producers. Supporting players like these hold key significance of increasing the income revenue of the country as well as its GDP. Again, this television program should be broadcasted because it will go a long way in helping to convey the message of peace amongst people of various backgrounds and religions. The broadcast not only teaches the views the purpose for this it also demonstrates to them how they can take up initiatives. For instance, like shown by Azzam during the Katrina Hurricane, people can use the natural gifts, talents, skills and expertise to help those neighbors that need their assistance. The broadcast will go a long way in teaching people how they can work hand in hand with their neighbor to improve the circumstances that surround their local community (Bonaut, 2012). The main contemporary issue of identity that has been addressed in the film is religion. In some instances, some Muslim feel justified to enact their ‘jihad wars’ on a population that is innocent and peaceful with each other. This film is aimed to illustrate how these wars have hurt the various parties such as the participants, themselves who leave their relatives in dire situations; other Muslim people, the victims of jihad wars, etc. Additionally, there are several racial and religious discriminations that have been ensued towards people. This film aims to demonstrate how prejudice acts have broken family bonds and led to people hurting one another on the basis of misconceptions. The program will take its audience on an emotional journey that will reveal cunning acts of characters that leads to disheartening results. The television program will leave its viewers with a better understanding and appreciation for their neighbor. The film will also highlight measures of selflessness that will be highlighted by characters such as Azzam. These features will aim to show viewers some of the corrective measures that can be undertaken in order to instigate justice into the community and restore an atmosphere of trust and mutual friendship within the society (Bonaut, 2012; Barrios, 2009). The story of this fictive treatment has been adopted from the film known as “My Name is Khan.” It is an Indian movie that was produced in 2010 by Shibani Bathija and was directed by Karan Johar. According to this broadcast, Rizvan Khan was the Muslim who was born in Mumbai and he moved to San Francisco where he lived with his blood brother together with his sister in law. The film shows the various protests he faced due to falling in love with a Hindu woman called Mandira. Despite all the hardships, family was able to get married and even commence a family business together.
