He attempts to bring realism by creating a painting showing two contrasting ways of paying respect to the death. At the background is a crucifix showing a person crucified while at the front view the picture shows a decent burial taking place. The background picture is instrumental in informing the public of doing away with old ways of doing things and adopting current ways. It is also a reaction to the authoritarian Roman rule and subjectivity. Good and bad art A good art is an art that be interpreted easily with a theme or subject matter. It should be educative or resembling some deep hidden factors while appearing simple. A good art balances the environment and the pictorial. A good art should have a purpose. A bad art is an art without a theme objective and purpose. It lacks balance and creates mixed reaction leading to confusion. Brutus The painting shows Brutus wife and children very emotional crying and wailing over the ruling Brutus has made against his own sons to bring about revolution in his empire Brutus appears to be calm but pictured to be in deep thoughts not even able to look back and see his own sons punished for committing treason The pictorial paintings of the building, statues and mode of dressing signify the Roman Empire. The name Brutus in itself also signifies the brutality going on in the picture Light and shadow are pictured are well illuminated in the picture with a good sharp contrast Drama depicts this single painting as observed in the picture. At the back Brutus son is carried away for punishment while at the center of the image Brutus is shown seated and calm while at the very left the wife and children are crying and wailing Realism Part 1 a) Realist art in the 19th century includes paintings and pictures that attempts to show the stratus of the lower, middle and upper class in addition to culture, customs, beliefs and mores of the people. The realist appeared to show democracy through their paintings to reject the subjectivity of Roman way of leadership. Realism aimed at providing the artists with the truthful nature of how contemporary life appears. b) In this picture the pictorial background shows a person crucified in a cross standing at the hills. Courbet attempts to bring realism into light by painting a picture showing a different mode of respecting the dead through a descent burial and rejecting the authoritarian ways of subjectivity of the ancient Roman Empire. Realism Part 2 The harsh governing of the Roman Empire led to realism. The artist through their pictures and graffiti communicated the hypocrisy of the rulers. The continued training by the art patrons also led to the evolution of realism. The revolution of the ancient Rome led to the development and this enlightened the artist to come up with such paintings and drawings. The use of paintings as tools or weapon for political propaganda also led to realism. Paintings as tools for social reform also led to realism. The wars led by Napoleon that led to establishment of museums also encouraged realism. Industrial revolution with the aim of many artists finding ways to earn a living and find ways of presenting their ideas also led to the birth of realism. The free market economy also led to realism as artists documented new people and places according to the pre-existing conditions. Romanticism 1. Romantic art is a reaction to the ways and thoughts of classicism. It is a move towards expression of modernism. Romantic paintings in the 19th century show emotion and reaction to what people thought was against the society. 2. a) The picture shows Napoleon the emperor of France as per that time visiting and meeting people suffering from plague. Napoleon expresses romanticism by even touching one of the people infected. On the contrary, one of his soldiers covers his nose note to breathe the air of the surrounding. Napoleon expresses himself as a true leader with emotion and caring attitudes. Napoleon himself organized the transfer of the plagued people to a facility where they can monitor and help them. b) The main theme of the picture is the emotion portrayed by Gros showing Napoleon visiting the plague stricken hospital in Graffa. Napoleon represents an emotional leader determined to prove his critics wrong by touching a sick man. The artist appeals to our emotions by creating pictures of nude people. There is also the reaction of one of the Napoleons soldier by covering his nose. c) The painting represents Napoleon as a divine leader showing some Christ like characteristics. Napoleon uses this picture to prove to his critics that he is a caring leader. Napoleon also uses this picture to clear off the propaganda that surrounded his leadership at the time he was fighting against British soldiers. Photography as an art Photographers were degraded and neglected people not being aware of the intensive process that leads to production of a picture. Due to the rejection, the photographers avoided clarity and imitated the later drawings and picture. In the 1890-1900, photography was promoted by pictorialism. Through numerous multinational groups and associations, international photography was promoted. Emerson proposed that photography should focus on the centre of the field just like a human eye. Robinson on the other hand formed a society of the linked ring that organized exhibitions. Robinson’s work of elaboration tableaux vivants involved technical precision but a different approach predated in his work. His work contained tonality of shallow focus and of simple centralized composition (Kingsley). Impressionism The impression of Manet in this picture is to present the truthful, dispassionate modernity. The key element of Manet work includes the nude women portrayed by the picture. The painting techniques include the sharp contrast created with mixture of bright and light colors. The subject matter of the painting is people sitting down enjoying their picnic. Part 2 The scandalous departure includes the woman being nude while the other woman on the background fetching water on a river. The scandalous departure seems to be two men sitting together with a naked woman. The other woman seems to be busy fetching water and does not appear to be in the same company. Modern art Modern art developed when realism came into existence. The artists created an impression of a new generation of paintings. The artist picked ill behaviors in the society, which they needed to address. Modern art was to enlighten the society about the fast evolving world (Crabtree). Works cited Crabtree, Alexandria.
