Jig’s Dilemma “Hills like White Elephants” is a story that can be considered to be a charming exertion of fine art. It is a story that entails two lovers. The male character in the story is perceived to have no name hence being referred to as the American. The story is written in a unique style. The story starts at the railway station where the two characters are seen waiting to departure to Madrid using a train. As the characters wait for the train, a disagreement arises amid them. Surprisingly, the argument takes on until the story ends.

The lady who is known as Jig is seen telling the American that she is not interested in carrying out the operation. It is quoted that the American was speaking to a lady whom he only referred to as Jig. There is fear portrayed by jig and she comes to a point that she doesn’t want to speak to the American and the whole idea at large. The America keeps on telling Jig that she must undergo the operation whereby Jig is reluctant in buying the idea. Jig is quoted telling the American that she is not interested whereas the American telling her it will not damage anything in their relationship and that they would be good as earlier.

Jig is much unwilling to agree to the proposal hence bring out some evidence on this. There is no sought of operation cited in the story by the author hence leaving the readers puzzled. The American is seen to put emphasis on the operation, however jig giving the readers another impression of the operation since she is scared on taking risks on the operation. The American is quotes, “it’s really an awful simple operation Jig”. The American puts the operation as a simple operation as he quotes, “It’s really not an operation at all…I know you wouldn’t mind it Jig, it’s really not anything.

It’s just to let air in.” since Jig isn’t sure about the whole thing, the American assures her that he would be beside her during the operation. He quotes, “I’ll go with you and I’ll stay with you all the time. They will just let the air in and then it’s all perfectly natural.” She also pleads the American to stop the discussion because it doesn’t make her feel good on the subject. She quotes that he should stop talking about the whole thing or else she will start screaming.

She requests the American to make an order for extra bottles of beer. This action serves a remedy to her since she wants to shun away from the conversation. The reader can assess that Jig is one lady who has got no interest on the American. This whole conversation on the operation seems to be drawn from the decision jig took. Since she cannot speak Spanish, she relies heavily on the American in all her communication she does and hats why she requests the American to order beer. The two characters separate on arrival.

Jig thinks that the American doesn’t care at all since he keeps on insisting for her to take the operation. Jig doesn’t understand why he keeps on insisting on the operation. Critics show that the operation was an abortion and that’s why Jig wasn’t interested in the idea. Alcohol seems as her console as well as to shut up the American. The American claims to love Jig but insists her to undergo the operation. This concludes that the American had no serious commitments on her since he could have supported her by letting her keep the baby.

This shows that jig strong-willed not to abort. Jig in the story shows that she had fallen in love with the untrue chap who kept on saying that he loved her and never proved this through actions. If she had realized this earlier she could have gone separate ways with the untrue chap. This story is rather educative. Jig’s decision not to undergo through the operation makes her a hero in the story. Things change for reason, and the American being turned down by Jig shows how thing turned out differently.

Jig points out at the end of the story that she cannot do all things the American wants since she also has a choice to make healthy decisions onto her life. This story serves a moral lesson to ladies who think that they can only rely on their lover’s decisions when solving crucial matters. Jig’s decision not carry out the operation shows that she has conscience and by having an abortion she could be a mother to a dead child or a murderer. This shows the love she had for her inborn child. She realized the man she had loved had no conscience at all and had never loved.

The American is one of the many men who do not like taking responsibilities of the damages they have caused. Who hates being a father? I bet the American hates being called daddy since children are a blessing from above. It is very true that the American could have left Jig after carrying out the abortion since he was escaping responsibilities. This story shows how single parenthood is increasing. In the case of Jig it is evident that she ended being a single parent which is not simple to think of.

She portrays mothers love for her baby. She is convinced that she will give birth and rather not abort in good or bad circumstances. She is a hero amongst women since she made the best decision. She is a strong woman who shuns cowardness. It is advisable for women not be that submissive to their husbands all the times. The American was putting Jig’s life at a crucial position since the operation was either to live or die and yet he claimed to love her. The American shows the many men out there who don’t care much about their loved ones.
