These structures, painted in live, vibrant, pastel and energetic colors, form the embodiment of the era during which Miami Beach was developed as a tropical playground. As a gesture of recognizing and preserving the importance of this era, the district was enrolled into the National Register of Historic Places 1. Consisting of the lower 23 blocks of the island from the south point of 1st street to 23rd street, the south beach is affectionately called the new American Riviera by the Americans 2.

Starting from the 1910s, the Miami Beach went through several phases of development and the South Beach was the first section of area to be developed due to efforts of Carl Fischer, the Lummus Brothers, John Collins, and others 3. Visitors to the south beach today will find Mac’s Club Deuce in the 14th street, the first bar of the area established in 1906. Starting from 1912 onwards, the south beach had attracted several entrepreneurs including the Miami businessmen, the Lummus Brothers, and Carl Fischer, a successful entrepreneur those days.

These businessmen, along with Collins, invested their worth in the area foreseeing a rapid development of the beach. The year 1913 saw the birth of the famous restaurant, Joe's Stone Crab. The year 1915 remains as a milestone in the great history of the beach. The combined efforts of these business visionaries first resulted in the formation of the Town of Miami Beach and later on, in the birth of the South Beach. As a memory to the Lummus Brothers who worked hard to sow the seeds for the rapid growth of the beach, a park was built in the area extending between the 6th and 14th streets and named after the brothers.

Today, it is known as the Lummus Park 4.
