The presentation of space in scenography determines performance. What is experienced in space is integral to the experience in the performance (Oddey and White, 2006). The experience in scenography is very critical in architectural presentation as it would be explored in this paper. Butterworth and McKinney (2009) describe scenography as “the manipulation and orchestration of the performance environment.” According to Howard (2002), the word comes from two Greek words: Skin and grato, which mean “stage” and “to describe”. Scenography works on the principle of a constructed space that is transformed and filled. In the world of art, it can be used to refer to the representation of an item following perspective rules.

In the field of architecture, representation is very important as it is what architects use to communicate while designing (Allen, 2000). Over the centuries, the relationship between a building and its intended representation has been changing profoundly. This paper examines architectural representation across a wide historical period, with an emphasis on the relationship between scenography and architecture in different historical periods: from the renaissance to the contemporary world.

Scenography and Perspective

Although scenography has been used in a theatrical situations, it can be quite useful in architecture. In this respect, scenography can be described as scene painting or perspective drawing. It is “the representation of a building in perspective”. A good example of scenography is the composition of Regent Street which was done by Nash (Curl, 2000). As a tool of representation, scenography has a significant and direct influence on the creation of forms and on how projects are developed conceptually. This means that the scenographic representation of an object is based on a point of view and not on the commonly used principal axis. Scenography makes it possible to represent or describe an object in all its dimensions, or simply, as it appears to the naked eye (Maller, 1991).
