Extract of sample "Article Rebuttal: Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin by John Cloud"

According to the author, undertaking exercise for weight loss is considered useless, because exercise stimulates hunger which causes an individual to eat more (Cloud, 2009). Correspondingly, the essay intends to provide a rebuttal to the article with valid arguments. AnalysisAnalysing the Reliability, Credibility, and Validity of the Data Used By the AuthorIn keeping with the article, in order to validate his claims the author has highlighted that in the year 2000, Mark Muraven and Roy Baumeister published a paper in Psychological Bulletin which states that self-control is similar to a muscle that gets weakened every day after use.

The Minnesota Heart Survey highlights that in 1980, 47% of people were undertaking regular exercise which grew to 57% in the year 2000, and yet there has been a rise in obesity. Northwestern University, in June 2009, conducted research in order to investigate the correlation between the development of diabetes and aerobic fitness. The research derived a result that being aerobically fit is less important than developing a body mass index that is normal in the prevention of disease.

In this situation, the author states that exercise does not help hefty people to reduce their weight. Eric Ravussin quotes that “In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless” wherein the author states that exercise is not important in reducing weight and the advertisements done by various gyms are untrue (Cloud, 2009). Logical Fallacies in the ArgumentFrom the analysis of the article, it is worth mentioning that if a person undertakes jogging it would lead to an increase in fitness and greater capability to do certain tasks.

The author misrepresents the survey conducted to support his idea. The author in this statement stresses the fact that even though there has been progress in people undertaking exercise, it has caused growth in obesity as well. However, it cannot be agreed that an increase in exercise causes a rise in obesity. Owing to the fact that exercise is actually related to lower body mass index which helps in the reduction of weight for heavy people. The author uses his own unreliable evidence wherein he states that exercise leads to stimulation of hunger but in reality, it’s actually the opposite.

It has been derived that exercise does not actually increase hunger, it overcomes hunger after a short period of exercise.ConclusionCorrespondingly, it can be acknowledged that the article by John Cloud was significantly misrepresented and was a result of poor research. Due to his disregard for fitness and exercise, the author stated that though there has been an increase in the number of people who are conscious of their health and fitness, there also has been a rise in obesity among people. It can be affirmed that the author falsifies the information provided in the article in order to support his ideology.

Besides, the article states that due to the increased consciousness of people for health, there has also been an escalation in obesity which cannot be agreed upon as the viewpoint of the author is irrelevant. In accordance with the article, exercise for heavy people is completely useless but it cannot be considered true because proper exercise leads to a reduction of weight. In addition, the author states that exercise results in stimulation of hunger but in effect it’s inappropriate as an individual becomes immune to the urge after undertaking exercise for a period of time.
