Capital Punishment is a Deterrent to Crime: An Annotated Bibliography Chan, J. & Oxley, D. (2004). The deterrent effect of capital punishment: A review of research evidence. Crime and Justice Bulletin, 84. Retrieved 25 February 2014 from http://info.lawaccess.nsw.gov.au/This bulletin aims at analyzing the empirical evidence on deterrence effect associated with capital punishment. From a survey of 74 research projects, the findings oppose the crime deterrence effect of capital punishment. Thus, the researchers support capital punishment as a moral and political choice rather than a crime deterrent tool.

Contrary opinion results from poor or lack of research. This bulletin provides useful information to develop the introduction. Importantly, it would be used in the body of the project to argue against the crime deterrent effect of capital punishment. Furthermore, it gives evidence to discredit those arguing for use of capital punishment to deter crime due to lack of research.Krohn, M. D., Lizotte, A. J., & Hall, G. P. (2010). Handbook on crime and deviance. New York, NY: Springer. This book provides a wide spectrum of information on crime and deviant behavior from a sociological perspective.

The authors support death penalty for utilitarian reasons and retribution. Even so, they give arguments of when death penalty does more harm than deterring crime. They back up their arguments with examples of various court cases and their consequences. It would be useful at the introduction of the project when defining capital punishment, its administration and objectives. It would also be used in the body when giving arguments for and against death penalty as a way to deter crime with the evidence of consequences of rulings providing appropriate examples.

Kronenwetter, M. (2001). Capital punishment: A reference handbook (2nd ed.). Santa Barbara, California: ABC-CLIO.This book argues that the perception of death being the harshest punishment would logically deter crime. Criminals serving life sentences do not have anything to deter them from crime other than the threat of death. On the other hand, it argues that capital punishment leaves the weak exposed to abuse from the strong and also results in social disorder, two factors which could promote crime.

This book provides a critical basis for putting capital punishment into perspective while developing the introduction. Other than providing background information throughout the project, it would be critical in the body of the project to argue for and against capital punishment as a deterrent to crime.North Carolina Coalition for Alternatives to Death Penalty. (2014). Failure to deter crime. Retrieved 25 February 2014 from http://nccadp.org/This article argues against capital punishment as a deterrent to crime.

It evidences this argument with the observation on the declining number of death sentences in North Carolina, leading to no death sentence in 2012. With this decline, the North Carolina Department of Justice reported declining murder rates. Other states that do not prescribe to death penalty also report lower crime rates. Rigorous research has discredited pro-capital punishment arguments. This would be a useful resource in arguing against capital punishment as a deterrent to crime. It would particularly provide an appropriate example to support this argument and discredit pro-capital punishment arguments.Tanner, R. (2007, June 11).

Studies say death penalty deters crime. The Washington Post. Retrieved 25 February 2014 from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/11/AR2007061100406.htmlIn this article, Tanner (2007) reports of findings from a literature review, thus his support for death penalty as a deterrent to crime. According to this reporter, death penalty deters 18 murders and 5 homicides on average. Further, speedy execution strengthens deterrent effect where a reduction in 2.75 years on death row prevents one murder.

According to the reporter, however, these new pro-deterrent studies have not had intense scrutiny. This resource would be used in the body. It would be used to give pro-deterrent arguments evidenced by statistics. However, the reporter’s argument that these studies have not been scrutinized would be used to disregard the arguments.
