Managing Corporate Social Responsibility in Oman - Dissertation Example

Despite the ongoing debate about CSR and whether businesses can contribute to society to protect the environment and human rights, nowadays there is considerable interest from different types of organizations to be a part of this business approach or at least to employ it as some kind of support to their conventional corporate operations. Moreover, there is a wide interest in observing multinational companies getting CSR right and especially in the developing countries, where the concept of companies being socially responsible by implementing certain business frameworks is fairly new and therefore the expectations of these company's contributions are unclear in most cases.

In particular, this research is an investigative study of how Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) is managing CSR in Oman, a developing country. The purpose of this study is to shed light on a fairly new business approach in the Omani economy, study the different variables that affect the level of globalization or localization of a CSR policy adopted by an MNC such as OXY. And examine the strengths and limitations of CSR in developing countries.Using schemes that Occidental Petroleum Corporation is using as a case in point, this research will study the frameworks available for MNCs.

In terms of scholarship, therefore, this study seeks to contribute by filling the gaps in two ways: at the theoretical level, by identifying the variables that affect the level of globalization or localization of CSR; and, at the operational level, to gather new data on CSR in developing countries, particularly Oman.Corporate social responsibility (CSR, also called corporate responsibility, corporate citizenship, responsible business, and corporate social opportunity) is a concept whereby organizations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, suppliers, employees,  shareholders, communities, and other shakeholders, as well as the environment.
