Purdue Academic Integrity Seminar Questions Question a) The metaphor of the mountains illustrates the difference of good and evil. The ability of recognizing this defines ethical and intellectual maturity. (b) The author is a good constructive. His decisions are conglomerate to big organizations and political players. Development and application of the conceptual models takes the same approach. (c) In ethical terms, the definition of a good soul is the ability to make moral decisions that do not hurt the feelings of others. (d) The date and the source of the reading indicate that similar cultures chose to use similar ethical aspects while making an analysis. The date indicates that they lacked basic information in appreciating other ethical concepts (Tzu 1). Question 2 Ethical aspects of conducting business include providing consumers with the correct information before they make their purchase. The process may mean losses for the organization, but it also creates a good public image in their bid to provide consumers with quality products. The main reason given to consumers on the reasons of labeling is that the modification helps the products to have a longer shelf life or to grow faster. Analyzing these reasons clearly indicates that the production industry is hungry to make more money by spending less. The consumer is left to deal with the effects of the products. Business ethics is important in creating lasting relationships with other business partners. Eradicating panic amongst consumers will come from the management of the companies by providing correct information on the ingredients used to generate their final product. Question 3 Self control strategies defined by Robert Assagiolli include analyzing the current situation. The strategies he advocates for include; making plans, problem identification, and setting goals. Self control starts with making plans to overcome the current situation. Goals succeed through careful planning overtime. Assagiolli goes on to explain the importance of identifying the problem that hinders self-control. The need to change in behavior starts by defining a specific problem linked to communicating with others. Goal setting is the last strategy highlighted by Assagiolli indicating the need to give a definition to the target behavior. It is up to the individual to decide on the change of the behavior. Goals should be specified to the future progress measured. Question 4 After reading “Meditations of Roman Emperor and Stoic Philosopher” I learned on ethical and intellectual debts that I owe to my family and friends. I owe them respect, honesty, and integrity towards what I have given them. I am thankful for the advice that they give me. Most of the time, I take this for granted without appreciating what they have done for me. The intellectual advice that they give me outside school gives me an advantage while handling non- study related activities. Question 5 According to Shenk, perseverance also means adaptation. In relation to Lincoln’s failures and success, perseverance meant changing his leadership patterns. At first, Lincoln advocated the peaceful fight against the regime but changed the approach later when it had clearly failed. The other applicable step is referred to as the ordeal in which the hero is confronting death and greatest fear. The hero starts to rise again at the reward stage; he was rewarded after being released and elected a president. After serving for the first term, Lincoln moved to the other step referred as return with the elixir, in this case, Lincoln faced death at an old age in his native home village where his remains can still be found. Question 6 (a) The current version which ends with the main villain quitting his job, and leaving the store in a dramatic manner is better than the previous longer version in which he proceeds to search for the girls at the beach. (b) The current ending is more dramatic since it makes him appear as hero even if he is not. (c) Nevertheless, he appears as a hero when he reprimands his boss for embarrassing the indecently dressed girls. (d) The audience is left wondering what the next step would be after quitting his job due to such a trivial issue as his boss reprimanding the indecently dressed girls. (e) The other ending in which they go to the beach to try to find the girls brings him out as just a trivial individual simply out to impress the women. Question 7 Values and habits that I am currently developing include the intellectual and ethical professionalism. The values of understanding and intellectual study assist in developing such outcomes in life. The first is the presence of a unifying theme, an objective that gives meaning to life, and values that work towards a given goal. Allport is a link between the pre-modern, modern, and postmodern realities It is a theory that portrays everything under one paradigm. Practitioners and scholars for academic, distinct, and professional domains use the theory. The theory originally starts as a transpersonal psychology that links the non-western and western. The link comes with understanding mental, biological, and divine understanding. There are major drawbacks that are likely to occur ,if such a separation is made, because politicians will abuse their power, and it is the role of the religious leaders to remind them that we are all identical before the discernments of the Lord, no matter the skin shade, spiritual connection, or race. Incidents of segregations, freedom of expression and abuse to the minority will be on the rise once such a separation is made. Religion seeks to preach peace and educate its followers about putting in place and obeying the just laws; this will enhance peaceful co-existence, spur growth and development in the nation, and more so contribute to peace. Question 8 (a) Plagiarism is a criminal act. It is the responsibility of the individuals to ensure they do not The responsibilities or duties of workers in relation to the WHS Act are to take reasonable care for their safety and health by making sure that their actions or lack of do not adversely affect the safety, health, and wellbeing of other workers. (b) It is a worker’s responsibility to comply with policies and regulations from a person conducting or undertaking business that are meant to safeguard the wellbeing, safety, and health of all those involved in the workplace. (c) The meaning of the term due diligence falls under the duties or responsibilities of officers, where it entails taking reasonable steps towards acquiring and keeping up-to-date with knowledge about work health and safety. Healthy and safety measure is achieved through endeavouring to gain an understanding of the business operations and risks or hazards associated with such an undertaking. (d) It involves ensuring that business people have mechanisms in place for receiving and processing information about the occurrence of incidents, risks, and hazards, and responding to them in an appropriate manner. Due diligence also involves ensuring that persons undertaking business have processes and implements of complying with their duties under the WHS. Question 9 Des Pres thinks that moral sense an idealistic illusion that is entirely based on the mind’s functions and how they influence all the other biological and physiological aspects of the body. The mind is regarded as a source of wisdom and morality, attributes that can be achieved through meditation that helps develop clarity, concentration, alleviate sorrow, and help people understand the truth. Every aspect of Des Pres teachings and practices is based on psychological principles as illustrated by descriptive phenomenology in mindfulness in psychotherapy. Recent correlations between spirituality as a critical component of human psychology have only reiterated what has been long considered an integral constituent of having moral sense. Psychotherapy from a humanistic approach utilizes similar principles witnessed in religion enlightenment experiences. Buddhism utilizes various states of mind to achieve different versions of reality with respect to situational awareness and purpose, which all culminates in the establishment of one integral whole. Moral sense can be considered psychological since it dwells on harnessing the power of the mind and its functions to achieve the ultimate goal of attaining a state of self-enlightenment. Question 10 (a) The quotes, “I felt that shock and inner turmoil. In order to regain peace I have had, in short, to come to terms with a too generous fortune” by Albert Camus and “What I want to talk about is the problem of manipulating and controlling things on a small scale” by Richard P. Feynman give a memorable expression because every society, people should have peace. This freedom, however, should be limited to specific contexts or environments. The section of the speech that talks about environmental protection engages the individual to increase awareness. It would, therefore, be inappropriate for an individual to appear dressed informally in an office setting. For instance, the girls in Updike’s short story are dressed inappropriately since the setting of the store, not a context to appear with beach attire. (b) We share the value of personal moral responsibility. If public nudity were legal, people would not walk naked since society, with or without laws requires individual to have a sense of decency. It is also a personal moral responsibility for any individual to cover up their nudity in public. Society considers a person exposing him or her nudity in public as insane. The interesting engagement is the use of personality to express growth within individuals. Lincoln told people to love those who hated them that people should bless whoever cursed them, should always do well to those who hated people, and in short people should love their enemies. The best way for religion to be involved in politics is in addressing the various injustices committed every day, according to Lincoln, he said there are two types of laws that exist. (c) The laws of justice deeply engage me. There are just and unjust laws, and the just law is one made by man that concurrently satisfies the ethical cypher of God; this is in divergence with the unwarranted rule, normally not rooted with the natural or eternal law. Unfortunately, most politicians apply the unjust law in order to accomplish their selfish interests. Perfect examples are the segregation of the minority, popularly known as the Negros, in some states, even though they were the majority, and they were not allowed to vote, the whites treated the blacks very meanly.
