Young Skins INTRODUCTION Over the past phenomenon, the fictitious studies have been widely recognized to reveal a number of non-existent settings. However, many of the renowned fiction studies have also been recognized to shed light on identifiable setting as they involve or provide straightforward reflection about the reality in response to the familiarity and freedom (Power, “Young Skins review – An extraordinary debut short-story collection”). In “Young Skins,” Collin Barrett has clearly defined his unique blend of representing freedom and familiarity. In this regard, the major aim of this essay is to reveal the experience of Barrett by exploring his way regarding how a city can frame the inhabitant or the employees working within it. THESIS STATEMENT The essay critically reviews the experiences revealed by both Colin Barrett and Walter Benjamin in their recent study named “Young Skins.” In order to assess the experience of the authors, the discussion of the essay provides an in-depth understanding about the different styles of the employees and defines a few major ways that a city frames with its ideological position of the populations and its subjectivities. In this regard, the discussion of the essay includes effective methods and techniques established by both the authors regarding the key subjects that the city exists to frame employees’ styles. In response to the efficacies of the methods and techniques mentioned by Barrett and Benjamin, the essay also reflects upon the ongoing contentions on the same issue. In addition, Glanbeigh argued whether a city creates the subjects or the subjects create the surroundings/situation in which they live. In this context, the discussion further provides major techniques in representations of the characters and/or Glanbeigh reflect Barrett’s attitude toward the culture that is inherent in Glanbeigh. IDENTIFYING DIFFERENT STYLES WAYS LEADING TO SHAPE EMPLOYEES’ EXPERINCE IN THE CITY Based on the knowledge and insights derived from the book, Barrett and Benjamin have been clearly stated a major set of ways that are formed by the city on an employee to change their attitude and behavioral skills. In “My Town,” Jimmy has clearly stated that “is nowhere you have been, but you know its ilk.” According to the statement, it can be stated that the county Mayo along with Glanbeigh is fully undermined by the unfaithful longings along with the frustration and missteps of the inhabitants. In response to the Jimmy’s statement, Barrett evokes that the lives of the young inhabitants, including, bouncers attendants of the petrol stations and minor criminals are likely to possess adequate skills that reflect their sensitivity that protects them from different external environment characteristics (Barrett 3-18). Therefore, sensitivity towards avoiding missteps can be duly accepted as one of the effective ways described by Barrett and Benjamin in “Young Skin,” which frame inhabitants’ skills towards defending the negative influences of the society. In this context, the way of sensitivity often leads to form an adequate awareness among a few groups of individuals that helps them acquire the actual satisfaction of their existence within the city. In addition, Barrett vividly represented his locality within Mayo. According to the study of the book, it has been mentioned by the author that "gnarled jawbone of the coastline" to the "massed dry ticking of the bramble ditches" in summertime. The statement significantly encourages the self-belief of the inhabitants that can construct a strong mind-set against different types of negative traits. In this context, the ideological position of the city along with its inhabitants often forms individuals’ behavioral skills (Barrett 3-18). Nevertheless, the subjectivity of the city has also been emphasized by Barratt in terms of shaping behavioral characteristics of the populations. The subjectivity of the city involves a major experience regarding the ideological backgrounds along with harmonized culture are a few major styles of the inhabitants. Therefore, subjectivity is also a major way described by both Barratt and Benjamin in Young Skin. According to their perception, the book reveals their experiences about how can social and ideological factors in an urban environment can frame the inhabitants towards protecting their familiarity and individual freedom as well (Barrett 45-68). With due regards to the understanding obtained from “Young Skin,” both Barrett and Benjamin has established their experiences regarding the key subjects of the city in terms of forming the characteristics of the inhabitants. RELEVANT ARGUMENTS ON THE AUTHORS’ EXPERIENCES With reference to the methods and techniques developed by both Barrett and Benjamin, the experiences of the authors have been explored through different methods and techniques about the subjectivity of the city towards forming its inhabitants. However, their experiences can also be argued in different perspectives. In the context of their experience, sensitivity of the populations developed by the ideological characteristics of the city has been duly identified as a way to frame the inhabitants within the city. However, it can be argued that the sensitivity of the individuals is often shaped by the cognitive skills along with the attitude and behavioral characteristics. In this regard, the density formed by the environment of the city might not have any negative influence only if the individuals are determined not to commit missteps or crime related activities. The experiences of Barrett and Benjamin can also be considered on the ground of intractability and scornful efforts towards the individuals with the habit of concealing from the world. In relation to the experiences revealed by both Barrett and Benjamin, the subjectivity of the city has been disclosed on the basis of its ideological aspects, which barely describes about changing trends along with cultural aspects. In this regard, the changing trends of the cultural aspects along with fiercely developing trends also have a major influence on the individuals within the city. With due regard to the understanding, it has been perceived that subjectivity can be hardly considered behind the current situation of the city. However, the term subjectivity can be recognized to define by different authors due to the severe changes in the city. In this context, Glanbeigh represented a dissimilar view of the characters regarding the opinions made by Barrett. According to the representation of the key characters, Glanbeigh has contradicted to Barrett’s opinions regarding the key determinants of the city that form its inhabitants. According to the observation, it has been revealed that the contradictions made by Glanbeigh were highly focused on the term sensitivity in shaping behavioral skills of the population. However, according to Glanbeigh, cultural differences or changing trends of the communities are the key characteristics that shape the attitude and behavioral skills of the inhabitants within a particular city. With this regard, the contradiction made by Glanbeigh can be accepted behind the key characteristics of city in forming its inhabitants. CONCLUSION The study of Barrett and Benjamin has been provided a major insight towards understanding the key drivers of a city that form its inhabitants. Moreover, the ways and key characters revealed in “Young Skins” have also provided major understanding about the critical roles of the city towards increasing sensitivity of the inhabitants. According to the opinion of Barrett and Benjamin, the subjectivity of the city is also a major determinant in terms of forming an adequate level of awareness of the inhabitants. In this regard, the subjectivity further develops the ideological position, which empowers individuals to avert various types of negative social influences leading to commit missteps or crime related activities. However, the key ways developed by Barrett and Benjamin has criticized due to the noticeable influence of cultural aspects revealed by Glanbeigh. According to the characteristics and their representations made by Glanbeigh, it has been perceived that changing cultural aspects have a major influence on the inhabitants within a particular urban environment. The changing trends as well as rapid development of socio-cultural factors fundamentally affect inhabitants towards forming their ideological characteristics. Works Cited Barrett, Collins.
