Reflective Commentary: A Play Therapy Presentation Parents are always concerned with the development of their children in physical, social and psychological well being. Their interest in different ways to improve the growth of their children lead to the success of conferences and seminars which are mainly organized to discuss issues related to children, their health issues and the hurdle they face in the developmental phase throughout their childhood. Parents are more interested in taking part in the interventions, therapies and steps that may cure their children or help them flourish. The presentation under consideration was designed to inform parents about therapeutic play and the play therapy as a successful and useful tool to aid children problems. Knowing the concern of majority f the parents, it was estimated that parents will attend and take interest in this presentation. The parent evening proved to be successful with as many as 45 parents attending it. Their presence was an apparent approval of their consent to help their children. Their presence was not, by any means, aimed to get any other advantage but the concern was merely to gain knowledge about their children’s issues and the ways to help their children in getting them out of those issues. Their involvement in the presentation and interest was a motivational factor for the presenter. The audience consisted of the anxious and concerned parents. The audience was much interested in knowing the healthier and effective outcomes of the play therapy. They were not merely people who could adopt any presented therapy or intervention without prior and complete information about it. They were, hence, very much interested in the presentation and the information being provided by the presenter. Their main concern was to find out the best way to help their children, hence, they were more inclined towards asking questions on the reliability and effectiveness of this therapy. The questions that parents asked and were more interested in were revolving around the practical implications of the therapeutical play. They were not interested in the neuroscience explanations and medical explanations. The reason behind this may be lack of knowledge which cause lack of interest among parents. Their major aim was to see a change in their children’s mental and psychological well being. They, probably, have less interest in knowing how this therapy affects the brain systems and neurological structures. Hence, parents were more motivated to have full grasp over the knowledge related to the outcomes in apparent manner rather than the neurological outcomes. The theoretical milestones were also less attractive to the parents like the neuroscience evidences. The presentation started with the statistical evidence of psychological and mental disorders that prevail in children. The devastating trends of these psychological disease and disorders made the parents more motivated to overcome them. Parents got more involved knowing the possible outcomes of these early psychological and mental health problems. Their questions were inclined towards knowing the issues with their own children and resolving them using the play therapy. They asked the presenters about the problems of their children and asked for the best play therapy for their particular problem. They wanted to know what kind of storytelling may help their children in achieving good academic results and what kind of arts or music may help their children in getting rid of their aggression. The aim was not only to introduce the parents with play therapy but also to motivate them on using these tools to resolve the issues. The presenter was very confident and knowledgeable as he answered the questions and explained the circumstances in detail. The presentation was a marvellous attempt to prove play therapy as a useful and valuable measure in resolving children psychological and mental health issues. The parents were interested in knowing more about this therapy and applying it for their children’s better future. The explanation, examples and case studies used by the presenter were of great importance. The case studies, specially, grabbed the attention of the audience and they felt more comfortable with the practical implications of play therapy. The case studies helped them in understanding the positive results. They associated those case studies with the problems of their own children and were interested in involving play therapy as their own children’s daily exercise. The parents’ evening was successful and useful for both parents and children as the information they gained would not be provided elsewhere with such depth and description. The use of play therapy, indeed, is a valuable tool for children’s mental and psychological treatment. However, lack of knowledge and distrust leads to the wastage of these valuable and easy tools. The parents who attended this presentation were convinced and motivated of using the play therapy. They were pleased of the information provided and were satisfied with the answers and explanation of the presenter. However, parents still were confused of its application in the particular situations of their children. They needed more support with the ways in which these exercises may be started and incorporated in their children’s life. They needed individual guidance and supervision while the play therapy is being used which was, of course, not possible for the presenter. However, the presentation was a good starting point for the parents to get more information on the play therapy and gave them a starting point to seek for further guidance.
