CHILD OBSERVATION FOR THREE DIFFERENT LESSONS IN ART College Introduction This is an observation report of a 6 year old boy named James. I was with James and helped him in making a collage and a vase. This report includes the lessons that he undertook in making the two materials. The report is about the lessons that James underwent to be able to make the two materials. Lesson 1 Teacher Date Subject Arts Class Preschool Topic Making a collage Time Context This is a lesson plan to teach James a 6 year old boy how to make a collage. Objectives By the end of this lesson, James should be able to make a collage and use it. Resources that are to be used Scraps of paper Flat materials e.g. manila paper Magazine and newspaper clips Wall paper Photographs and shopping bags activities At first I will give James a collage model that I have made, then he will look at it and I will make sure that he admires it I will then ask him to list the advantages of having his own collage Next I will tell him that I would love to teach him to know how to make his own collage I will then choose a base that is flat and choose a nice background I will cut the base to the desired size and shape After that I will arrange all the materials on the ground and start working on them I will apply glue on all the first 4 materials and then ask James to try and apply one of the materials by himself After we have inserted a lot of materials, I would allow the collage to dry As my collage dry, I would ask James to try and make his own collage using the same way that I used but I will be there to help him as he is doing this Notes James is a bright student and was very cooperative during the lesson. Even though he was not able to understand and make the collage at first, he was keen to learn and after sometime he was able to come up with his own collage Homework I left James with the homework to go and try to make a collage for his mum and then I promised him that his mother would buy him a toy Confidential student information James is one student who is very bright and grasp things very fast. He can do well if he is given more arts lessons Lesson 2 This is the lesson that James learnt how to make a vase using clay Teacher Date Subject Arts Class Topic Making a vase Time Context This is a lesson design that was used to teach James to make a vase Objectives By the end of this lesson, James should be able to make a model of a vase alone with guidance from a professional Resources Clay Water Plastic jug Activities At first I will give James a vase model that I have made, then he will look at it and I will make sure that he admires it I will then ask him to list the advantages of having his own vase Next I will tell him that I would love to teach him to know how to make his own vase I will design the vase by drawing the vase on a paper and telling James that I want to teach him to know how to make such a vase I will then bring all the tools that are necessary for the making of the vase and put them close to me. This include a blowpipe, blocks, marver, punty and bunch I will begin by gathering all the clay into the preheated end of a blowpipe I will then shape the clay and ask James to help me shape it I will then ask for James help to transfer the vase into a punty so that I can work with it from there Detach the vase from the panty and heat let it dry before heating it Notes on James James really likes this lesson and he really participated in the making of the vase Homework For his homework, I asked James to go and try making his own vase using clay Special notes The lesson ended when James was happy that he could make his own vase James was able to come up with a cracked vessel but at his age, it was an achievement and I hope the homework that I left him would benefit him a lot and that he will be able to learn more with time. Lesson 3 Lesson 3 is a lesson that was used to enable James to learn how to paint. A painting kit was necessary here and the lesson was well planned. Teacher Date Subject Class Topic Time context This is a lesson to help teach James on how to paint. The vase that we had made earlier is the one that we will paint here Objectives By the end of this lesson, James should be able to paint a vase if he is given a vase of this kind. He should be able to make choices of the colours that he is to use in painting of the vase Resources A pale of paint A painting brush The vase that we had made Activities I will take all the paints and ask James to choose the one that he loves most (Grauer, 2005). After he has chosen the color that he loves, I will then start by painting part of the vase and then asking him to complete the painting but under my guidance Notes James liked the painting lesson and promised to paint the vase that I had left him to make. Report James is a 6 year old boy who comes from a wealthy family. His parents live in the upper suburbs of the city and are well off. The young boy is exposed to several computer games that help develop his mind and at 6 years of age, he is able to do things that other boys of his age are not able to do. As I was teaching James how to make the collage, he surprised me of how much he knew. He already knew about the collage and the basics of how the collage is made. On further inquiry I found out that James is a keen follower of artistic programs in the television and this can be part of the reason why he looks intelligent. James is a born artist and this can be seen from the way that he works with the different things. I observed his work and the homework that I left him and I noticed that apart from his talent in art, he is also very hard working. He is a promising artist who should be natured from the beginning so that by the time he is old he can be a good artist. The objective of my art lesson was to enable me to learn the different abilities that are in James and to try and come up with possible solutions to how I can help develop the talents that he has. My objectives were realized and I noticed that James can become a better artist if he is given chance to do artistic things from an early age. I talked to his parents about this and they promised to consider this. The artwork that was produced by James showed a lot about his ability and this were some of the evidence that I presented his parents with and used to convince them (Grauer, 2005). In conclusion my objective of teaching James was realized. I was able to identify his potential at his age and use this to convince his parents to take him to an arts school. I also managed to achieve my education objective which were to teach James to make collages and to enable him to be able to make and paint a vase.
