LEARNING MODEL al Affiliation Diagrammatic representation of the lesson plan TOPIC: EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE LIFE OF ASTUDENT Objective: A sixth grade class in California Community School will analyze the impact of Facebook as a social media and how they could use it as an educative forum with an expected efficiency of (95%). Time: one hour Materials: a computer, text books, drawn charts and internet connectivity or access such as a modem Media: digital images, video and Facebook site (a form of social media) Procedure: 8:00-8:10-gauge how much the students know about the social media by asking them questions on what each student knows in brief 8:10-8:20-Explain to them the whole concept of social media, what it is and how it came about 8:20-8:30- Allow for questions from the students on how the whole concept of social media, how it came about or the core reason for its inception 8:30-8:40-Educate them on the benefits of the social media and how they can use it as a learning avenue or forum other being an entertainment space 8:40-8:50- Partipation time where the students can discuss with their friends in groups of five as they internalize the ideas they have learnt. As a tutor, I would walk around to get their feel of the subject, answering their questions in the groups around the classroom 8:50-8:55- Question and answer sessions as I give the students quick questions on what they have learnt as far as using the social media as a learning forum is concerned. This is important because it would cement and solidify what they would have learnt. If there is any confusion or aspect that was not properly understood, it would be raised by the students at this time as the tutor sets the record straight 8:55-9:00- Cleanup of the charts, as we hang them around the classroom walls. Homework: Have them discuss the various forms of the social media and how it serves as an informative avenue for the students in this day and age. TOPIC: EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE LIFE OF A STUDENT Analysis of learners This being a class of forty students, who are in the sixth grade, it is only natural and expected that their minds are still developing and they would wish to try different things at this age. At the face value, the age range of these students would lie in the border of eight to twelve years. Their entry regard and competence is of relatively high Intelligence Quotient (IQ). This is to say and imply that their ease to grasp and understand things or concepts is relatively high thus, they would understand and comprehend issues and things being explained to them with some degree of ease. Conventionally, the preferred learning technique at the disposal of this students would be through the use of the visual and audio media. This is so because their minds are responsive to the audio-visual graphics. The social media in itself and composition has these preferences with an added advantage of fun of being “fun.” In principle, these students would be motivated and encouraged to use the social media as learning component. In principle, the attitude of the students in this class and the prior knowledge or exposure to the social media would form the basis of analyzing the learners. Basically, these are leaners in a first world country, thus their exposure to social media is real and the notion of social media ought to be naturally inspiring and likeable thus, their attitude would be receptive. Standards and Objectives Given that this is a lesson on the impact of Facebook as a social media avenue for the learning of sixth graders in the California Community School, express procedures must be followed. The primary objective and aim of this class is to intergrate the social media as a whole concept into the learning program of the students. This stems from the fact that the world today has gone to the digital realm and all people are in one or the other forms of social media. It would be an added advantage for the students if they tapped the technological opportunity that the digital spectrum has introduced to the world. Conversely, it is an objective to guide the students into proper use of the social media so as to realize growth and development in their pursuit of education. It goes without saying that there are several loopholes in the social media which adversely affect the learning experience of the students. This is the reason as to why it would be proper to guide and carefully control the social media so as to protect them from any harmful or offensive material which is available in the social media. The ABCD model would also be used to peg the objectives of learning outcome. A-audience, is composed of young budding learners who are involved in the general use of the social media. These are sixth grade students of American origin under the English First Language program, relatively young, outgoing with some degree of exposure and access to social media. Behavior is also commendable and so is the condition of their lifestyle relative to the internet access. At the end of the learning process, the learners ought to be in a position to correctly articulate the benefits of using the social media as a learning platform. Strategies and Resources Given the fact this is an interesting topic because it touches on the dynamic nature of information technology as a notion or a concept, apt and careful resources would be used to relay the information to the students (Metzler, 2005. It is critical to note that a projector and a white board would be beneficial in this learning endeavor. Equally, it would be a teacher and student based learning process. Firstly, the teacher would give a brief account on the original purpose of Facebook as a social media, why it was invented and how it has changed over the years. The teacher would guide the discussion on the board on how Facebook has changed its interface and increased the number of people who use the services. It would also be proper to introduce the lessons by first equipping the learners with basic computer skills and technique. Secondly, the students would have an interactive session where they join the learning pages and interact with the other users and themselves as well. Few students would be used for the demonstration so that most of them stand guided on how to proceed henceforth. In principle, this would be a double strategy which are teacher-centered and student-centered for the second part. Similarly, there are learning charts that ought to be stuck in the classes of the students so as to give them an idea of memory of remembering what would be taught to them in future times. This is based on the fact that the students may not have the capacity or the ability to retain what they learn from a first time lesson. Therefore, the classrooms would have chats and boards which the students learn in would have the chats on the walls so as to remind the students of what they learn. In brief, the computer would bring the fun and the digital aspect thereby enabling the students to change the learning material from the monotonous books that the students may have been accustomed to. A projector would be important so that as I log in the social media sites of informative value, they would be able to view the happenings on the board. This would also serve as the visual graphic so that during the interactive sessions they put forth their ideas and concepts. Utilize resources As a prospective teacher or tutor for the students it would be proper that I completely familiarize myself with the tenets of the computer applications. This preparation would have to be extended to the students themselves, by bringing the computers and the chats to the classrooms. It would be proper to teach and repair the students with the learning of the computer hardware parts. This would be formed from the chats so that when they see the actual computers they would be in a position to relate the theory to the practical aspects of the computers. Thus, I would digital images on the white board and the video from the department of education regarding safe and proper use of the social media especially Facebook. A video on the safe usage of the social media would also be another media, presented by the government education department. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBHuFuBie) The media to use include, digital images, a video and a Facebook as a form of the social media. Learner participation During the previous phase, I would expect that the students would have questions and queries as to how to the computer works. This is an open interactive sessions and it would require the engagement of the students. For instance, it would be wise and prudent to ask the student to discuss and name the part of the computer as they would have learned from theory to practice. During their group discussions, I would expect them to share and learn with one another how the parts of the computer function. Then the learning phase would include teaching the benefits and demerits of the social media. This is after, the students would have had prior exposure to the social media and thus, as a tutor, the geist of the learning would be to give them the benefits and how to enjoy learning from the social media. It is apt to have peer-reviewed participation whereby the learners discuss and brain storm within themselves in groups of five before we enlarge the body of participation to the whole class. Evaluate and Revise At the tail end, the aim and objective would be gauge the learner achievement as far as the lesson of the effects of the social media is to the students. The end aim and role of the plan is to guide the student to realize the effects of the social media. The aim of this study and lesson plan would be to demystify the social media as a learning avenue and source of education and not just as an avenue of entertainment. At this stage, I may introduce a short assessment in the form of an examination or a test so as to gauge which specific areas the students did not understand well. I would give guidance to them if their answers do not amount to proper use of social media because a learner may like a social media which is not helpful to the learner. Below is an evaluation rubric for the lesson. Student A B C D Content Showed great mastery of content and ease in ability to grasp concepts thus answered questions aptly and correctly Good mastery of content, relative ease of answering questions Fair mastery of contents, fair response to questions, Poor mastery of content, unable to answer questions during quiz or prompt Concentration Social media does not distract him, maintains focus during lesson Maintains good focus in class Maintains less focus in class, distracted by Facebook or social media. Very distracted in class, little focus in the discussion. Participation Participates fully, asking questions, maintains eye contact, fully engaged in the learning Participates in some parts which interest them, asks questions in some areas Participates less, asks relatively less questions, little interest in discussion No participation, no asking questions, no answers.
