LESSON PLAN TO TEACH ENGLISH USING LITERATURE Language that will be taught English Art form that will be integrated Literature: The Goosewith the Golden Eggs Age of the learners 7 years old Level of the learners Basic Objectives/goals of the plan To teach English to ESL students by enabling students to expand their English vocabulary through the appreciation of popular English literature Time needed to execute the plan Three hours or two classes Materials and resources needed to execute the plan Story of The Goose with the Golden Eggs with its character illustrations Instructional setting Classroom Expected outcome ESL students will have a better grasp of the English language through a widened vocabulary and understanding of complex sentences. I. Lesson Objectives: a. To effectively teach the English language to ESL students to that effect that they would have grasp of the language by expanding their vocabulary. b. To teach ESL students how to write creatively in English using literature as a guide. c. To increase the language competency of the ESL students in English. II. Instructional Material The story of The Goose with the Golden Eggs Visual representation of The Goose with the Golden Eggs and other characters in the story Powerpoint presentation in narrating the story of The Goose with the Golden Eggs for the students to have a visual grasp of the story INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN Sequence of Instructional Procedures/Activities/Events 1. Teacher will explain the importance of vocabulary in learning the English language. Teacher will explain further that vocabulary and grasp of the language can be learned effectively by literature specifically its popular stories where the student’s imagination will be engaged. 2. Teacher will elaborate that it would be necessary for students to learn how to express and communicate in English. One of the best way to express and communicate themselves is to observe how popular English literature narrate stories and learn how to write their own story using proper grammar and structure. 3. Teacher will introduced the literature The Goose with the Golden Eggs. Teacher will tell the story with its visual representation to make the story lively and will ask student to take note of vocabularies, sentences and other things that are unclear to them. 4. Teacher will use powerpoint presentation for the characters assume a visual representation and to make the story lively and engaging for the ESL students. This will also stimulate the imagination of the students. 5. Students will then be asked which of the words, sentences and ideas that are unclear to them where the teacher will explain their meanings. 6. Discussion of the difficult English words, sentences and idiomatic expressions will follow where the teacher will explain to the ESL students what they meant and how they are used in the English language. 7. An assessment will conclude the class to determine improvement of the ESL students in learning the English language. 8. Students will be given homework to write their own story based on what they have learned from the literature The Goose with the Golden Eggs. Pedagogical Strategy: Catching the imagination of ESL students through a popular English literature story of the The Goose with the Golden Eggs is an effective way to teach English. English is learned easier when its learner is engaged with the story where their imagination is stimulated by the fantasy told in the literature. It would also remove the bore associated with teaching the English language especially if the students are still very young with very short attention span. Procedural/method notes It is important that the student’s imagination will be engaged by the story of The Goose with the Golden Eggs so that they will find the learning of English language interesting. When the students imagination are stimulated by the story of The Goose with the Golden Eggs, learning English language will be easier because all they have to do is to substitute events, ideas, thoughts and fantasy in the story with the language. Thus, some exaggeration and acting out may be necessary in narrating the story to make the story alive and interesting with the end of engaging the student’s imagination in the story of The Goose with the Golden Eggs. Discussion about the story among students will be encouraged using the language of English for them to be comfortable with the language. LESSON PLAN TO TEACH ENGLISH USING MUSIC Name Class Language that will be taught English Art form that will be integrated Music: Wheels on the Bus Song Age of the learners 8 years old Level of the learners Basic Objectives/goals of the plan To teach English to ESL students by enabling them to under meanings of sentences through the appreciation of popular music Time needed to execute the plan One class Materials and resources needed to execute the plan Portable stereo and USB Instructional setting Classroom Expected outcome ESL students will have a better grasp of the English language through a widened vocabulary and understanding of complex sentences. I. Lesson Objectives: a. To effectively teach the English language to ESL students to that effect that they would have a better grasp of the English language by understanding complex sentences through the appreciation of a music. b. To increase the language competency of the ESL students in English. II. Instructional Material Wheels on the Bus Song USB Portable stereo INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN Sequence of Instructional Procedures/Activities/Events 1. Teacher will explain the importance of interpreting the meaning of sentences in the English language. Teacher will explain further that understanding the meaning behind the sentences can be learned effectively by listening to a popular music where the student will enjoy listening and subconsciously learn the English language. 2. Teacher will introduced the popular music of Wheels on the Bus Song and will play it in the class. Students will listen attentively. The lyrics of the music will also be written on the board for the ESL students to interpret the meaning. 3. Teacher will divide the ESL students and will be asked how they understand the music. Discussion among students about the meaning of the song and its lyrics will be encouraged by the teacher. 4. In the later part of the class, the teacher will give the meaning of the lyrics and will identify which part the ESL students got the meaning of the lyrics right and which lyrics needs more explanation to the students. 5. ESL students will be given homework to choose their own music and interpret the way the Wheels on the Bus Song was interpreted in class. 6. An assessment will conclude the class to determine improvement of the ESL students in learning the English language. The assessment will involve re Pedagogical Strategy: Popular music which young kids can relate to is an effective tool to teach English language to ESL students because they are having fun listening to it. English is learned easier when the learner can relate to the medium of teaching. Moreso when they are entertained by the music that is used to teach them English. . Procedural/method notes The popular music of Wheels on the Bus Song is used in teaching the English language because it is fun to sing. Most kids can relate to it so it would be easier to engage them with the subject using the music as a tool of instruction. The instructor however must be careful not to allow the class to digress from the subject because the students may instead talk about other songs that they like and that would veer away the attention of the class from learning English.
